Why do you think it is Scandinavian?  It seems more likely to be Indonesian or Thai to me from thios side of the world.

perhaps I should have said Scandi style

However, I am happy to confirm it is Scandinavian.  :)

Designed by Pertti Kallioinen for LasiSepät and called "Metsä"  (=forest). It is available in various sizes from a tealight holders to larger bowls and plates. I think the largest are over 30cm in diameter.

Thanks ic1, but really: I am here to help you identify your object, I did not ask to be helping you to sell it. So I would appreciate you stand behind your attributions at ebay yourself. You can easily google this object and find lots of them so I think that should be good enough.
Thank you for your understanding.

I always thought the 'Cactus' Vases were attributed to Pertti Kallioinen for LasiSepät and called "Metsä", px.  Am I getting them mixed up with something else??
Rosie. :sun:

Yep, Rosie, I think you mix up something. "Metsä" really is the topic item of this thread. Doesn't the pattern look like "forest" like with branches bending in the wind?  :) Also this design is documented in a publication of the Finnish Glass Museum.

I know what model you mean with "cactus" as it has been discussed in some old thread and it most certainly was made by LasiSepät and whynot most probably was also designed by Pertti Kallioinen as he did a lot of designs for them.
I so far haven't just found any proof for that myself, nor the name of the design. Only items with LasiSepät sticker.

Hi px!
Do you know if there is a similar design? I´ve got a bowl I´ve always suspected to be Humppila, because it´s
in their distinctive colourway clear and amber. The motif is almost the same, but the trees aren´t grouped as
regularly and their branches bend counter-clockwise...
May take some time to find it and provide a picture.  :-[

Hi dirk! I feel like Sherlock Holmes but, sorry, my mind doesn't work like his.  :ho:
I only think of a design with a counter clockwise swirl but the pattern is very regular and not so forest... So; looking forward to you finding your bowl to get something visual.  :usd:

I had to search... and thankfully found it quite quickly.  :)
Sorry for hijacking this thread, but in this case I think the pieces are similar enough to be
compared.

I am glad you found it dirk! This gets interesting. It looks so Humppila for the colour, you are correct. But the design is very "Metsä" although counter clockwise, which I had never noticed before!  :o I have seen a couple but not ever looked into them so closely to compare.

First, I would have thought P.Kallioinen might have worked a the design for Humppila as to be slightly different. It is known he worked for many factories. But then I found this: the same bowl as yours in clear and with LasiSepät sticker; http://kuvat2.huuto.net/c/92/df7cf555aa9d80938f567d93dd7a5-orig.jpg (http://kuvat2.huuto.net/c/92/df7cf555aa9d80938f567d93dd7a5-orig.jpg)
If, and I cannot see why not as it's not a big deal anyway, the sticker was there from the beginning one option is P Kallioinen made this design later? Maybe the first Metsä -series did not include a bowl in this shape. Interesting! Will have to try to find more now.  :)

Many thanks for the info, px - much appreciated!  :hiclp:
It is indeed a bit strange that they made both of these.... BTW I remember I´ve seen one of the
´original´ bowls from this thread with a sprayed on decoration in blue and green. It was some
months ago on ebay, but doesn´t seem to be listed anymore. Have you ever come across one of
those, too? Is this technique known for other LasiSepät designs, too?

Rosie, getting more and more interesting.  :o  ;D

dirk, no way.. sprayed on ?? Never.  :o  Only bright green or blue solid colour, and "old rosa". Like I said - will have to look for more!

Hi px,
here´s the one I mentioned. The colour still looks sprayed on to me:
ebay (http://cgi.ebay.de/260801470990?ru=http%3A%2F%2Fshop.ebay.de%3A80%2Fi.html%3F_from%3DR40%26_trksid%3Dp4712.m570.l1313%26_nkw%3D260801470990%26_sacat%3DSee-All-Categories%26_fvi%3D1&_rdc=1)

I would say it was sprayed too...

wow, thanks dirk! I have never seen one like that here, and wouldn't have believed a Finnish glass factory would do something that washes and wears off... I have only seen that in the cheapest glassware before.  :o
Would definitely like someone see one in real life tho and confirm your verdicts. :o Very interesting !

Then Rosie comes along and throws another spanner in the works.....if this didn't have a label, I would have said it was Metsa?????

Ha! Thanks rosie, interesting, in deed !  :hiclp:
This very much enhances my theory that P.Kallioinen may have sold his designs but kept the rights himself. So he could sell them further. It seems, as well as Viking, this design may have been produced in Italy and Denmark too, not to mention at least LasiSepät but probably some other Finnish factory too.
 :-\

Oh, and before that ebay ad disappears: the picture is of a 16,5cm high vase in the Metsä design, dark brown and with a rectangular "Viking Hand made USA" sticker.
I have seen clear ones in that particular shape, also one with a LasiSepät sticker that had the upper part in green, lower clear.

Can confirm these were made in Italy as well. Last week I saw the bowl through a closed junk shop´s
window. The label read ´Made in Italy - Centrifug??´ - unfortunately I couldn´t make out if there was
a makers name on the label as well...  :-\

Reached Australia as well - no labels but the local op-shop had two - one the same as the original one for this topic and a second one much shallower(c 2" depth).  First one was fro sale at $6(aust) = c. 3.60pounds.

There has been several discussions on the board regarding the Lasisepät designs; in the UK they were made by Ravenhead and sold as part of their "Flair" range.

Hi Robbo, :hi:

Now that Really interests me, given I have so many 'Lasisepat' votives,.
Please can you let me know where there is any documented evidence for this, because I have a box with Ravenhead on it with 2 pieces in it, and I also have 12 other pieces that match, that are neither labelled nor signed, so I don't know who made which??

The only evidence is that some of the designs have been spotted in Ravenhead boxes (the box design including a photo of the item). I see them in charity shops, unboxed / unlabelled, very frequently; I'm sure other people must see them frequently too. It just reinforces the probability most of those found in the UK are from a British volume producer.

Just popping back to the Metsa Vase made by Viking Glass, currently listed on eBay.

This is quite an important piece of help in the research of this pattern, so I wrote to the owners who are selling it, asking if we could have their permission to use the pictures here.  They have very kindly agreed that we may use them and also have said that it they have any other pictures that may be useful in their archives, they will email them to me to use.
I think that is very kind of them indeed, and does mean that we will have the pictures after the listing has ended, so they will be here for reference.
