Title: p/ws or possible knife rests.
Post by: Paul S. on January 27, 2013, 03:28:13 PM
I did think they were knife rests possibly, but that was really only because I couldn't think of anything better.             Dimensions are...........almost 2" (50mm) tall and about 3" long (75mm), with flat polished bases  -  a little wear, and even a couple of very small stones.           No real idea of date either, but am guessing about mid C20 or bit earlier. :-\
Does anyone have more accurate thoughts?  -  and thanks for looking. :)

Hello Wuff  -  do I take it that you mean a water colour painting brush, and are you able to give an indication of age please.     Many thanks for your help. :)

Water colours or (possibly more often) just black for calligraphy.
I believe the two I have go back to the 1920/30ies - but most likely there will be more recent ones (second half 20th c) around. Not sure about yours.

There's one on ebay that indicates a Chinese brush holder.  Ran across another that said 'chopstick holder' :)

Hi Paul, Wuff is spot on.  They are definately Chinese Calligraphy Brush Holders.  More often seen in blue and white ceramic,  or carved wood.

They would double up nicely as chopstick holders as suggested by cubby01, or even ring holders,  but they are calligraphy brush holders.

I collect knife rests Paul, only Art Deco animals and birds though,  so if you ever see any on your wanderings.........

Rosie.  :)

Added:  This could become a whole new collection phenomena Paul,  look at this beautiful one:

It is beautiful!!!

thanks Rosie........
Regret I'm no exponent in the use of caligraphy brushes or chopsticks - but thought they looked interesting with the p/w canes.

Don't think I've ever seen any art deco animal or bird type knife rests  -  the only sort I come across are the usual dumb bell shaped examples, but will keep my eye out for you.

and thanks for the link - some great stuff there................now if only I had three life times and more shekels to spare ;)
