Hi all
Brought this mystery at a fair today. Looked at first glance to me to be a perthshire, but the setup and canes do not look right, and the base is flat with a star cut. I know some perthshires have that base, but the canes don't look right to me? Anyone want to have an opinion???????????
cheers
Ian

Hi Ian
It is Perthshire - a PP4 from the 1969 - 1971 period. Hence the early and not so typical canes.

So, now wondering if the seller of this:

Got it rather wrong and it isn't a PP4? Also thought P cane came in in 1978 as well?

I think the one you linked to is a post 1993 version of the PP4. As for the sale price...Wow! I have sold a few PP4 in the past couple of years for around £25 to £50. That said, I have seen quite a few Perthshire weights do extremely well in the last few weeks (though not everyone that has been on offer).
I feel that the market for decent middle value weights such as Perthshire / Whitefriars / Selkirk / good Caithness etc is strengthening quite rapidly recently - maybe paperweights are seen as a better investment than a building society or bank account?

that one doesnt appear to have a star cut base though?

The PP4s have a hollow ground base, rather than flat cut with star, from 1972 onwards. If you don't have the Perthshire Paperweights book (which details all this), I could help you out, as I have a spare copy for sale....at a very reasonable price....
