I did not see this label on Murano 101, so please feel free to use the best shot. The duck is 5 1/2" by 6". The interesting thing is, engraved on the bottom is "TOUR D'ARGENT". This is the name of a restaurant in France, famous for its duck dishes. Any opinions are welcome!
-
Karla, thank you for the label. I've added it to the Murano101 album on our GlassGallery here: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-8590 with a cross-reference back to this topic.

You're very welcome!

There is a picture of a similar duck on page 155 of Leslie Pina's Archimede Seguso. The legend says that it is "a colorful sommerso duck on molded clear base, made for the famous French restaurant, Tour D'Argent, which was given to diners when they were served their renowned duck..." So, apparently it is an A. Seguso design :-)

Thank you, Anita! Hmm, wonder what a duck dinner costs, lol. Something tells me a lot!
Thanks again for your help.
-
I imagine that the ducks didn't cost the restaurant a lot. We just pay a lot for them now. :) Pina wrote that the duck in her book has a value of $300-400. The duck in the book has its bill closed. Your duck, with its bill open, looks like it is smiling. I like your duck a lot more. Maybe Seguso designed several different ducks to encourage customers to come back to collect the entire set.

Thanks again, Anita! It was preordained that I post that bird here & you answered: 'Argent' means silver, lol!

Another one has popped up here http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,17919.0.html (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,17919.0.html) :)

It's an invasion! Thanks again for the info. I parked him on my site until I figure out what to do with him
-
I just got one too! If not for this thread, I wouldn't have known what it was:

$25!!! (plus shipping, of course).

Yes! ;D I just hope they send me my item this time. The last time I bought something there (a really nice looking Murano bird for $5 plus shipping) they said they accidentally "recycled" it. I assume this means they relisted and sold it to someone else.
-
Well, it has arrived! ;D A few pics:

Oooow, he's much brighter than mine! Very pretty & I like the engraving better too.
-
That's funny, I actually like the color on yours better! More duck-like, I guess. :) Also, the red/yellow color combo is used so much in Chinese glass, I think that reduces its appeal a little.
-
We should have a duck fashion show, lol!
-
A collection would look lovely!
-
Hi,
I bought this example a few months ago that has it's original box and also 'Made in Murano' label . The signature is not as elaborate as the other duck owned by shadylane78
Regards,
Patrick. :)

I'm glad this thread came up again. I've learned a bit more since the time it was written. The duck that was posted first was probably made by Fratelli Pitau. There is a little about the ducks and some pictures in the Zoo at https://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/birds-8. Personally I do not know if Archimede Seguso made any of these ducks. They don't really look like their work. I've seen some that have Ferro stickers and some with Pitau stickers, but never any with A. Seguso stickers. If someone has one that has an A. Seguso sticker, I would love to see it. Sometimes books have mistakes and this may be one. I'll be glad to be proved wrong on this one.
Thank you for all the pictures, Patrick. He provided most of the Tour d'Argent duck shots.
-
It seems (this discussion is older than this board) that the Tour d'Argent handed out souvenir ducks in quite considerable numbers, and switched producers several times. It was thought they were supplied by Seguso at one time, and later by Barbini. I could imagine there are other Murano makers in the duck business too.

With you 100% on that .................. I have about 7 ducks now and have noticed the quality of some vary a lot , probably due to the source of supplier. I will try to compare them all sometime.
I had called a halt to my collection but could not resist buying the one with box .
Regards,
Patrick.
Ps, Anita, I was in Leeds, Alabama at the Barber Motorcycle Museum just before Christmas.........
-
Patrick, I wish I had known. Leeds is very close. We could have met for coffee or lunch and talked about our thoughts on the Tour d'Argent ducks. Sorry to have missed you.
-
I don't blame you, Patrick, for buying the one with the box. I love it when old glass comes in the original box. It makes it even more special or to me at least.

Beautiful ducks ! Really enjoyed reading this !
Here is a link to a postcard on ebay....which has the number of your duck on it ! Perhaps this is what they were giving away before the glass ducks ! I know which I would prefer .
