Title: Interesting .. A signature cane?
Post by: petern00 on February 18, 2012, 02:10:00 AM
This is an interesting piece.  For some (non-rational) reason I think of it as an experimental or training task for someone developing their skills.  Does anyone reconize any of the elements?

Hi Peter.

The canes are Murano, but I am not sure what the strange symbol represents.

Alan.

I doubt that it is a signature cane. One, because the Murano makers very very rarely used signature canes; and two, I seem to recall that “K” is not part of the Italian alphabet. My best guess it that it is either a corporate logo for export or perhaps a zodiac symbol.

Based on the canes I'm thinking ALT as the maker and circa 1970's.

If the cane represents initials or a logo, then the maker clearly did not take the time to set all those cane slices the same way up so that the symbol had the bendy bit coming out of the straight bits from the same side. If I commissioned a weight with many copies of a logo cane I would want them to all to show as the correct design!

Two of them look more like vc - not from the same cane as the others?.  (12 and 4 o'clock from the centre.)

PS I know nothing about paperweights but this is quite interesting - the who and why especially.

I wondered if they might be an Alchemy Symbol....is there an Alchemist in the house?  Might it have been made for a chemical industry giveaway?

I can see what you mean Nancy,  there are 2 that are different,  but I have to confess I would never have spotted that myself!!

I'm beginning suspect you might be correct Peter....a learners piece?
On the other hand, I know nothing about paperweights....I only have 2 to my name!

I'm pretty sure it is a stick figure of a running ostrich  ;D

Thanks for the range of comments .. and lateral thinking! The zodiac or alchemy thoughts are particularly interesting.

The bottom view makes it clear that the setup comprises concentric circles of the same complex cane - symbol at centre, surrounded by six cogs.  I suspect variations will be those seen in slices taken along the length of a common cane.

I'll pursue the search after returning from a few days away from base.

Regards

Suggestions from Rose and Rosie that the K-like cane might be a symbol of some kind has prompted several internet searches.  These have lead into varied and diverse fields -  e.g. zodiac, alchemy, heiroglyphs, runes, the Mayan alphabet, tattoo symbols(!) - but all to no avail.  I'll keep an eye out and also pursue the Murano and ALT leads from Alan and 'alpha' respectively.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to the hunt.
