Title: American perhaps? Two Hyacinth vases and a crackle jug.
Post by: Tigerchips on February 21, 2006, 02:03:01 AM
Me again, sorry for posting so many things.

These look American to me.

I think this one looks a bit like Pilgrim or Rainbow glass.

I think this one is made by the same maker. It looks identical in shape except for the crimped rim.

This one has controlled bubbles, I say controlled but they look kind of rushed to me. The bubbles appear inside the rings and just above them. It's crackle glass with a light green colour to it. It has a rough pontil and a few bubbles here and there that I don't think were mean't to be there. Not much ware to the base.

Patricia, the expert on hyacinth glasses, is unable to join us just yet, but asks me to apologise for her absence and promises to join us properly soon!

No. 2 then!

Based on a discussion I was having with her the other day then...it is currently believed that these glasses date from just after ww2. It seems that UK factories no longer made hyacinth and crocus vases, but retailers imported them from the continent, and that this rim is very likely typical of the factories in Belgium and Northern France.

It should also be said that the glassblowers in Belgium travelled back and forth to Bohemia in waves during the period, and designs were imported and exported along with them, so precise identification will be difficult to pin down.

There is a 'study group' meeting shortly on 'pressed glass /hyacinth vases' and perhaps Patricia will be able to tell us more details about yours in a few weeks time.

Thanks for your help Jay. I would never have guessed that they may come from Belgium or Northern France. I have a lot to learn.

Just a story for what it's worth:
About 3 years ago, a more then keen hyacinth glass collector bought from an equally keen dealer a beautiful and very red hyacinth vase for somewhere betwen 2 and 300 Euro (I was never told exactly how much but a lot). It was a glass on a foot, balluster shape and the for us very important cup, every collector's dream. Not even a month after that the collecter could buy on Ebay the exact same glass, in fact as many as she liked , in exactly that fantastic red colour... made in India.
About 5 years ago a department store in my home town had a special thing going on about India, they had imported a planeload of stuff and amongst it there were hyacinth vases in all colours including beautiful red ones... it's just a thought! Patricia

I would never have thought of India. Thanks Patricia. I'll look into it.  :)
