Title: My First Glass Paperweights.
Post by: lhazeldahl on September 09, 2005, 11:04:15 PM
Hello,

My name is Linda, this is my first post to your paperweights forum.

I came upon these small pieces at a yard sale and bought them for $2.00 each.  I have been a member of this board long enough to know not to pass them up.  They are the same size, 2 3/4 inches wide and 2 inches tall.

Anything at all that I can learn about these is greatly appreciated.  I thank you in advance,  I am very honored to be a part of this community.

Welcome, Linda!  :D

The paperweights are very colourful and 'jazzy' aren't they?

I have seen these described either as 'Bohemian' or 'Chinese', but I believe this style of weight is also produced in India!     There is a large glass works at Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh and I have seen weights of this design, and particularly these sprays and swirls of bright reds, yellows and oranges, attributed to them.

Welcome to the world of paperweight collecting!  It's very easy to get hooked!

Hi, Leni,

Getting Hooked?  You know, you got that right!! :!: The first one of these pieces, the not-as-bright one, if you look at it from several angles it has a strong resemblance of three orchids.

Thanks so much for the leads, I will get right on it.  Since this is my 'maiden voyage' for paperweights,    8) I want to find out all there is to know about my sweet little new found passions.

I appreciate your response and generousity in sharing information, Leni.    You and the others on this board have made me feel welcome and I look forward to the time when I can offer something in return.

Yeah, that's a fantastic site, isn't it, Anne?  :D

Everyone who says "Chinese" every time they don't recognise a weight should be made to spend an hour or so browsing there

Not that I mean anyone on *this* site, of course!  :P

Hi Linda welcome to paperweight collecting

Stick with this board, don't be afraid to ask questions and people will tell you exactly what you need to know - not what you need to hear LOL

That's what I have found

Also get a few paperweight books - 'The Miller's Paperweight Collectors Guide' is slim but full of info on cane types, etc - it's only £6.00 so you can't go wrong

http://mahasamatman.com/Paperweights/?Colin=on is a good site, look at his links and you will find more

HELLO,

Thanks for the heads-up, kind people!  It may be another week before I can shake loose and do some more studying.  We are going to California to our daughters wedding.....the youngest just married in June!  Sooooo glad this is almost thru.   Too many plans, too much expence, too many little gals in "drama" mode!

Way too old for this....you are all so great and I will be back soon.

Linda
