Title: Textured vase
Post by: Seventh_Tree on August 17, 2008, 09:22:33 PM
Does anybody know who really made these vases?
I know they were produced in at least two sizes and in at least 4 different colours.
According to the DK '20th Century Glass' book(page 48), and it's also on their website here (http://www.antiques.dk.com/detail.php/Modern%20Classics/Glass/Scandinavian/Riihimaen%20Lasi%20Oy/Nanny%20Still/10307557).
However, it's on whitefriars.org 'mistaken identities' section (http://www.whitefriars.com/isit_contents.php?pageNum_Mistaken=6&totalRows_Mistaken=345&ID=800) as being made by Old Colony Japan?

Who's right?

Neither attributions sound entirely right. First of all, if it were Nanny Still I think we should have seen one of these before; and what is "Old colony Japan" supposed to be? A Japanese maker or an American pattern? In an y case, it might help if you put in your location. And a question of different magnitude: is it for sale?

These are quite common in the UK, but not Rihiimaki I would say

As Christine says these vases seem to crop up fairly regularly - whilst similar to the Riihimaki pieces they're often confused with, I believe these are Japanese (not entirely sure why I think this though!)

As I said on my first post, this vase(or at least the amber coloured one) is on antiques.dk.com and also in the Judith Millers/DK '20th Century Glass' book and on both it's attributed to Nanny Still/Riihimaki. It's a fairly common vase on the likes of ebay being described as a Riihimaki piece and many web stores have this as a Riihimaki vase too.

I have no idea who Old Colony Japan are, that's why I'm questioning who actually made these....

I live the UK and the vase isn't for sale, sorry.

Judith isn't always right and errors in print lead to errors online... They have much more the feel of Oberglas or Ingridglas to me but I really don't know.
Here's another attribution (http://www.hiandlomodern.com/glassScand.html), scroll down

Ivo email me if you want one...

Hey funny - an attribution to Aseda. That looks much more likely.
<waiting for Patricia to return to see if it a/ is a bulb vase and b/she has more info on it>

When these turn up in Australia, they have the label: "Old Colony, Japan". What that means, I don't know.

Yes, that's because it's similar to one that Nanny Still designed for Riihimaki - but it isn't the same.  The Nanny Still vase in question was designed in 1967 and is called 'Fenomena' click http://www.huuto.net/fi/showitem.php3?itemid=84589275 - as you can see it's much more heavily textured than yours and the shape is different.  I doubt yours is Scandinavian.

And it has a base that's encased in clear!

All I can say is, most definitely not Riihimaen. I have also seen one labelled with "Old Colony, Japan" but have be unable to find out any more information.

Thanks, Della, I was starting to think I'd gone bonkers. :chky: Ivo, I hope I didn't sound disrespectful!

I've been noting pieces with Japanese labels on Australian eBay for a while. There are some fairly nice pieces, particularly sold under the label 'Hineri'. It might be an area of collection in the future, perhaps?

Not Ingridglas - I agree with Dirk.
