Title: Expensive Silesian / Thuringian

I was watching this battered little Silesian / Thuringian (http://rover.ebay.com/rover/1/710-53481-19255-0/1?icep_ff3=2&pub=5574631383&toolid=10001&campid=5336261829&customid=&icep_item=170891604826&ipn=psmain&icep_vectorid=229508&kwid=902099&mtid=824&kw=lg) weight on eBay, and was astounded at the price it sold for. Did the buyer believe it was Clichy?

In any case, the damage is probably such that it is beyond restoration - these weights are very hard glass, and cracks under chips and bruises run very deep: there would be nearly nothing left it it was cleaned up. It would have been quite nice in an undamaged state...

Description is a typical wording by sellers planning to deceive potential buyers:
Quote
No signature canes - suggested makers include Clichy or St Louis.
"Well - I didn't say it was - somebody else did !" would be the response to a complaint.

Both the buyer and the underbidder thought it was clichy - hence the huge jump from £60 ish to £200+.  Madness

Hi Ray

I hadn't checked who won it - but you are of course correct. Curious.

How can you check who won it?

Hi.

You can not check directly who won something nowadays (I much preferred eBay when you could see who was bidding, as well as who won...).  But you can use inspired guesswork if you suspect a particular person, as the limited information that eBay provides includes two letter from their alias, and details of their feedback.  So you need to know a possible answer, and then you may be able to test your hypothesis...a bit arcane, I'm afraid.
