Title: Hadeland Eskimo and Liskeard Glass paperweights.
Post by: Anne E.B. on October 16, 2005, 02:47:25 PM
Just thought I'd share these two.  I'm not a collector of p.w's but couldn't resist these two, bought this morning on the carboot.

The first is a cute little eskimo standing only 2" high.  It still has its original label "NORSK HADELAND KRYSTALL."  Does anyone know how old this might be?

The second came as a bit of a surprise to me - a Liskeard Glass paperweight.  I didn't know they made these.  Liskeard Glass later became Merlin Glass - who now make door knobs, I think.  A natural progression from making paperweights I wonder?  It has its original label on the base "LISKEARD STUDIO GLASS Made in Cornwall ENGLAND" with the LG logo also.

I didn't realise how difficult it is to photograph paperweights!!! (especially the clear Hadeland).

Are these collectable by any chance? :P

Hey Anne, what nice finds!  I love the little eskimo - he's so simple, and yet captures the essence of an eskimo...lovely!

The Liskeard paperweight is a nice find too - didn't you do well!  Sorry I can't add anything to what you know already, just wanted to say I liked them.  :D  :D

That's the trouble with this board... you come along looking for answers to one mystery and find yourself hooked on collecting something entirely different before you know it!  (I have 4 paperweights and that is how it is going to stay!... resist, resist!)  ;) PS I love the eskimo!

I've had the same Hadeland eskimo for 15 years, and I know of someone who has owned a frosted one (signed, that is why I know mine is Hadeland) for 30 years - and he was never in the habit of buying secondhand.  :D

I actually have several designs of Liskeard paperweight including one in green as shown in a pic earlier in the messages and one of cloud glass style too.

Incidentally, Liskeard also did jars (of which I still have three) and also chargers (although I sold mine a while back).

Liskeard have a little museum in Cornwall which is worth a look.

Hi Tom - I'll be going down that way in a week's time and might check out the museum if I have time.  Is it on the site of the original LG (now Merlin Glass), or is it elsewhere in Liskeard?

If you get time, I'd love to see the jars if you can post pics.

Regards - Anne E.B.

Hi, yes of course when I get a moment I will enclose some pics - (although where the jars have got to is beyond me at the moment!) :-))

I am not sure where abouts exactly it is, but it was visited on my behalf actually by someone who purchased a piece of Liskeard glass from me and mentioned en passant that they actually lived just outside Liskeard!

I think they said it was in the centre though.

Best wishes

Success!  I've just got to try and remember what I did with the first image now.

Thanks Anne, much appreciated. If you could make the images bigger too it would help folks see detail - you should be able to make them up to 700 pixels along the longer edge and they should still fit the board's size limits. :)  I love the Eskimo!

I am a rather a fan of Liskeard items and have 4 paperweights -  thought I would show you my little collection.
(a)  A Millefiore - apparently they bought Murano canes for these.
(b)  An internal toroidal bubble.
(c)  A St Tudy for a gallery in St Tudy (1976) LE 500.  Contains a Granite rock piece from Dartmoor.
(d)  A Yelverton (1987) for the same gallery after it moved to Yelverton.  Also contains a piece of Granite from Dartmoor
