Title: Whitefriars 'Style' 'Doorstop' Paperweight - Info Appreciated...
Post by: Greg. on January 24, 2012, 12:04:58 PM
Hi All,

Would be grateful for any thoughts on this 'Doorstop' paperweight, originally under the misconception that it may have been Whitefriars, although understand that this is not the case.

Green coloured controlled bubble inclusion, cased in clear glass. Measures 5 inches tall and approximately 2.5 inches wide.

I just noticed there is a similar weight on the Whitefriars website, looking at past auction results, although also has ambiguous/unknown origins.

Any thoughts appreciated.

Thanks
Greg

I have one of these - this colour. John (Glassobsessed) showed a pic of it to one of his wfs mates who said it wasn't wfs, but something else.
I can't remember what it was though. Elucidation would be appreciated by me too!

(and I'd sort of like to know how these lookey-likeys came into being and why and how... just sort of.)

I had been hoping for profit, when I get around to selling.  :P

I've had some of these with Murano labels.  They are easy to make so I assume several companies made similar items.

I see Jaffe Rose were a British Importer based in London from 1939-91 and largely imported Czech glassware, including paperweights and vases with controlled bubbles, which would tie in with the weight in question.

I gather Jaffe Rose, whilst largely importing from Czechoslovakia appear to have imported glass from a number of countries, although looking at the comments at the bottom of the below thread, I see Chris mentions that these weights are well documented as Czech in origin.

Just reading the last post as crossed posted. Seeing as they now appear to have been produced by a number of different companies it looks like attributing a specific manufacturer may be difficult, although for now presumably Czech or Italian in origin and imported by Jaffe Rose.

Thanks all for your comments, any other thoughts most welcome.

 >:D

But who copied who? - or is it such a mundane sort of thing that they all evolved on their own?

That's a very good question Sue! - I wonder if the ones mentioned with the Murano label were exactly the same as the one in question...? The green colour is fairly distinctive.

I see the one mentioned in the linked thread earlier and on the Whitefriars website (link below) are assumed Czech. I wonder if they are regarded as Czech in origin due to Jaffe Rose being largely a Czech importer. Perhaps, these specific ones, could originate in Italy as it is known that Jaffe Rose also imported from their, anyway some food for thought....

The wfs site is good for id-ing wfs, but I'm not sure they're so concerned with id-ing non-wfs accurately.   :-\
