Title: Glass Zoo - Glass Study.com (not .org) Notice
Post by: Frank on July 06, 2012, 09:10:28 PM
These sites will be unavailable for as short as time as possible. All need major software upgrades. They will not all disappear at the same time, one by one and probably for a day or two each. Once that has been completed I will be fully back to adding new content - initially for the Glass Zoo.

The urgency of these upgrades has been the recent hacking of two of the sites.

I don't know what I'd do without The Glass Zoo!  Thanks Frank. :)

Glad to hear that  :) New version should be nicer to use although little change expected. Existing members will all be extended 2 years and a one-time membership in future.

I think I paid for a year's membership, but I can't remember  ;D Really, I wonder where my head is at some days.

Don't see you there Carolyn, now you will have to wait a bit to get too the goodies ;-) you cannot register until updates are done.

Currently working on Glasscatalogue as that was the most badly hacked site...

This is going to take longer than expected 8 days on the first of the three sites so far and only on step 5 of about 50 steps...

On top of which I will probably have to manually correct a lot of the descriptions as there seems to be no way to preserve accented characters, quotes, fractions and symbols :(

This happened with Scotlands Glass corrupting over 5,000 which I only finished doing recently. A problem that will not recur in the future as characters are stored properly by the databases now. But noit in these old databases. GMB had a similar problem in recent move.

Further down the line... I got all off the data for one site successfully migrated. But have failed to get the software functional. Our Anne has been a great help.

It is also apparent that the same corruption of certain characters has occurred in the migration as happened to Scotland Glass with a similar version to version migration.

But this time round I have to go through two stages of migration (only one for Scotland's Glass) so I have decided to install the software for the latest version without data and reload the data the hard way. Well not too hard as I can copy text from old site versions to new. I will start doing this tomorrow with first site, glass catalogue, I will the do the glass zoo and finally glass-study.com which should be the easiest.

One problem with this is the users will need to request new passwords to be able to log in. I will contact all members directly. So lots of 15 hour days for the next 5 or 6 weeks!

Scotland's Glass 'should' migrate painlessly.

Running websites of such complexity can be difficult at times!  :-\ The good news (for me) is that future upgrades are now a part of the software and will be mostly one click and done.

Hi Sue,

No. Sorry.
1. ================
Glass-study.com, Glass-zoo and Glasscatalogue are all subscription sites, idea being to earn me some money so that I can spend all of my time uploading my library to them....does not work in practise of course ;-) . Glass-study.com membership covers all 3, Glass-Zoo is also subscribable separately. No-one can currently subscribe except manually via me due to outdated software problems and a hacker. But all existing subscribers are open-ended until I get fully back to work again.

2. ================
Glass-study.org is free to register on but offers little of use unless you put documents up for free or paid, download those by others... or to track your own downloads. Not very active yet in that sphere.

No one gets any of the money donated which is used to pay hosting related costs for all sites and the rest in a deposit account. Accounts for the registered non-profit association will shortly appear on the site. (Another task!!!)

This still needs people to make it completely independent of me and ensure it can meet its purpose - I might just end up asking a library to take it and the fund over... but previous attempts to do that did not get so far. With a funding and approach in place it might be more successful... but would still need voluntary support or a much larger fund for professional support.. Sites like Scotlandś Glass can still keep growing regardless of the Association as they already have a core of volunteers, but even their only me on technical back-end.

3.==================
Glass bibliography also on Glass-study.org site has yet another registration... FREE... but registration is for those who want to add information, reviews etc. to the bibliography.  Or for those who want to create a bibliography for their own research and have it organised in one of the many standard formats. I still have to finish migrating the original biblio into this new one (hopefully its final conversion) and then get on with expanding it... hopefully others will see fit to expand it too. It will also be getting upgraded soon and be a lot faster and better for including non-book references. It is already suited to listing individual articles within journals too. Also it uses an industry standard format for bibliographies and users can readily transfer to other bibliographic tools that they use.

4.============
So thatś the story... hope it clears up confusion. If not ask away

I've finally been pushed (kicking and screaming, still protesting noisily) into getting a paypal account - I only want to make a donation and I can now do it - once I can register.

tee-hee.

 No need to register to make a donation Sue! Donations can also be cash in post... so paypal not required.

Also you should be able to use Paypal for paying most things with just a credit card... no account needed. You only need account for receiving ot recurring payments. However, it is actually cheaper to use Paypal then some English banks for Euro transfers...  those banks charge double or more than paypal fees. Bizarre.

I don't (and won't) have a credit card. I don't DO credit or debt.
I'm a dinosaur. I live within my means.
But I need to start selling stuff myself - I need the house-space back, hence paypal. >:(

Yeah know that feeling. A lot of mine was in boxes in Amsterdam due to space and our living parts are smaller here. I just started working through my crates and putting on eBay... first listings in 6 years... eBay has changed a lot in that time  :o

Glass Zoo is 99% functional at glasszoo.info now.... main thing still to fix is additional images for each item as the image links seem to have got broken in the two migrations  :'(  so more time needed to reconnect them all.... plus side is it works a lot faster. Both sites are still alive and will remain so until I get those images reconnected... In future there will be a once only subscription for life. Existing subscribers are now life subscribers! You should be able to log in if you are already a member, and new subscription facility will be added asap. You can always email me if you are in a hurry to get in!

Then I have to migrate Scotland's Glass... hopefully as it is only a single migration and no server change it will go smoothly... famous last words.  :D

You are both so very kind, thank you. Despite appearances, I am up to my neck in glass again, well mostly web techie side of it and some research threads - really looking forwards to getting new material onto the sites instead of just fixing them .....

OMG started this thread last July.  :-o

Anyway zoo is up and running at glasszoo.info (http://glasszoo.info/) and if you are quick you can have a FREE 24 hour subscription....

Normal subscription is 16 Euros and is for life.

So far updated10 sites but only 4 or 5 completely... so still some way to go. Glass-study.org is still offline...  ??? so has to be next for sorting!

And again, give our regards to Carmen and Felicity. I'd visit the zoo, but I've lost my little pink book where I have all my computer passwords, etc.
