Title: Monster paperweight Clues needed please
Post by: Pat on November 10, 2006, 09:38:13 PM
I've got this huge paperweight/doorstop it's 5" diameter and 4" high and weighs 2.749 kilos!  Its controlled bubbles with a huge bubble at the top rising from a point at the bottom. It also has swirls around it. The bubble and swirls remind me of Whitefriars as does the bottom which has a quite deeply ground out and polished pontil, but I don't remember ever seeing any Whitefriars like this.

Yes - this is definitely a Whitefriars, I thought they only made them in two colours - balck and blue

Just for my own education, are these commonly known as 'dumps', or is this term specifically reserved for the ovoid shaped ones?

Pat - that's an immense piece of glass!!    :D

Dave?  Do you have pics of the other colours in this WF range?  I'd like to see them as I haven't seen this style before.  Is that a frosted base?  Is that usual for WF paperweight/doorstops?  :?

Thanks Dave. It is black swirls in the daylight but when held up to the sky they look olive green!  Max the last ordinary WF bubble weight I had was sort of unpolished around the pontil also. Well now at least I can sell it knowing what it is.

I may be incorrect but I thought a dump was made out of leftover glass so it wouldn't go to waste.

They are Whitefriars, I've got two of them and the colours are blue/flint and  cinnamon/flint and date from 1969. And yes they are heavy!!
I've also seen one with green swirls.
