Title: Bohemian and Chinese paperweights.
Post by: Anne E.B. on May 05, 2006, 04:52:18 PM
Couple of paperweights just acquired.

Bohemia Glass - made in Czechoslovakia - with gold foil label.  Dates back to 1970 at least.  Curious blue/green tint - more noticeable at the base.  My favourite :P  I've done a swap with my son for it, and it now sits with my Czech glass, but is the only paperweight (and the first one I've come across).

The other is most probably Chinese.  Really cleverly made with a 'donut' encircling the two shapes which sit on top of gold inclusions.  It has a label on the base with what looks like LP9992 (?design number).

I've got one of those Chinese ones!  They're really quite cleverly done, aren't they? :D  Mine didn't have a label though  :(

Hi Anne, your Bohemia label is the same as the label on my candleholders discussed here where Marcus explained what the label means: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5238.0.html (http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,5238.0.html)

I like the Chinese one as well - as Leni says, it is quite cleverly done. :)

Thanks Leni and Anne :P   The label on the Chinese one is handwritten - which is a bit strange.

Just realised - I've got a candleholder like yours Anne - somewhere, if I can remember where I've put it    It drove me mad trying to I.D. it. In the end I packed it away half out of frustration and partly in the hope that I would come across another one to make the pair up.  If I remember, it can be used both ends I think.

I think the Chinese one is marketed by Royal Crest.  Their abstract weights are really rather clever, although as with all the Chinese weights (because they go for quantity over quality) copies of the same designs often differ from each other in a way which would be unacceptable to most makers' quality control!    However, I just search until I find one I like and in which the design is acceptable to me.  And I try not to pay more than a fiver!   Bargain!
