Title: 1930's Webb bowl cut design
Post by: yesvil on July 04, 2011, 02:46:37 PM
Found this delightful small bowl and have a couple of questions.

Should this have a lid of some sort? I can't see any wear to the collar part and I'm surmising it would be more likely that the rim would not be bevelled if there was one originally - any one know?

Also was this design part of a named series?

All info gratefully received.

sorry I can't help with a pattern name - and although you don't give a size (or which back stamp you have), this does look as though it is possibly a 'rose bowl' - and would originally have had a metal grill on the top (usually slightly domed).    Have attached pics. of two bowls to show how they look complete - the metal pedestal example being German and the other a more recent Thomas Webb example.    I don't think that wear would be evident as these grills simply sit atop the bowl and don't, usually, get subjected to any pressure.    Yours is a nice piece by the way. :)

Thank you Paul, maybe just a little hopeful that I have a complete item. Another thing I have noticed is that the cut design does go close to the rim of this bowl and so the profile of the lid would have to be quite narrow or else it would cover the design.

The mark corresponds to the one (In my book) for 1935-49

The size - Oops forgot that minor detail! It's actually really quite small:

Height - 40mm

Width (Rim) - 54mm

ah, bisto  -  then my assumption probably wrong, and at that size possibly not a rose bowl........just goes to show how important it can be to include the dimensions.    Do you think it might perhaps be an item from a trinket set?? - and is missing a lid of some description :)

I once bought a rubber mallet from Screwfix on the basis of a picture in their little book - When it turned up it was almost the size of me!!!!!!!! I will endeavour to add sizes in future.
