Title: Milan Metelak drinking glasses?
Post by: glassobsessed on August 09, 2011, 10:39:44 AM
I bought these glasses recently just because I thought the design was so good. While poking around and trying to research a Milan Metelak vase I was selling I bumped into this page which has these glasses attributed to Metelak, scroll two thirds of the way down the page: http://www.detesk.cz/en/virtual-museum/author-objects/

So were they made at Harrachov, can anyone confirm the attribution?

Hi John,
I researched some early CGRs the other day. Although the glasses were produced for a long time. From my archive, it seems they appeared in an advert in Vol III, 1948, No1, with a decanter too, as part of the the "Harrachov special liqueur suite 2046...." They probably appear in later CGRs too. I cannot help with the designer though, Metalek seems very possible,

Wow, available in 1948? They seem so 'modern', perhaps I should not be surprised, this is not the first time I have been decades out estimating when a design may date from.

That is fantastic Robert, definitely Harrachov is great news, thank you.

Definitely Harrachov. Certainly produced for decades as they were a classic design. I am also fairly sure of the CGR I saw it in, I was only studying and photographing pre-1954 CGRs and the way I stored the images suggests the 1948 issue I describe. I also found the small Liskova vase I posted earlier in the year here, in a 1950 CGR, that, like your glasses, seems also a very early date for "modern design" that I would associate as a gut feel as 1950's design at the earliest....

Beautiful.

We should not be that surprised at the dates really, just think of what Bauhaus were doing twenty or thirty years earlier.
