Title: Wirkkala or Dartington
Post by: David555 on August 31, 2005, 09:59:18 PM
This is a crystal glass candle holder - double sided - at first I thought it may be Dartington but it's really heavy and I can't find it in the catalogues - http://tinypic.com/bgz8uf.jpg - not signed and no label

This is a similar item by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala - (mine is upside down btw) as said mine is not signed and I don't think there is a relation but there is no harm in asking - http://tinypic.com/bgz9co.jpg

Hi Adam
There seems to be no relation between the pieces - I do not think the Wirkkala piece is reversible. Your thickwalled candle stick & pretzel vase would probably originate in one of the Polish works (Irena, Krosno, Wresniak, Saphira) which sprecialise in clear & solid.

I agree - thanks - paid 50p so no harm - pretzel vase LOL - I would never have guessed as we don't have them in Scotland - but you are right I looked up a picture, a kind of silly object really - if you lifted it up to get a pretzel you would burn your hand on the candle!

Is it not a Wedgwood candleholder/vase.

As you can see the candle holder part is the same but the vase part isn't. Perhaps a slight variation of design.

My candleholder/vase has a Frosted "W" mark but sometimes Wedgwood doesn't mark there items.  :)

I've had another look at your picture and I think I can see the frosted "W" mark (Top Centre). Or am I seing things?  :)

Hi Tigerchips -

I'd say it was similar, but not identical. Look at the curves on each. Adam's is much less curvy. Doesn't mean that it isn't Ww, just that you have to be a bit sceptical.

Adam, is there really a frosted W mark, or is it a trick of the light?

Cheers,
Cathy.

It may be a Wedgwood piece but the W you see is a trick of the light - there are no frosted or etched marks on this piece - thanks all for taking an interest
