Title: hobnail glass
Post by: Garnet on November 07, 2006, 05:18:29 AM
I have a pitcher w/8 glasses/tumblers - cranberry color w/white milky/opalescent  upper rim.  It is hobnail glass.  I married into the family in 1973 & was given this set by the in-laws.  It had been in my husband's family for some time.  Can anyone direct me on how to get more information on this.  I am pretty sure is it Fenton glass - however there are not markings that I have seen.  Thanks for your help.  Garnet

Fenton hobnail in cranberry
the 12 oz tumbler was produced 1952-1967;
the 40 oz. ice lip jug 1964-1965.
The cranberry Hobnail line was discontinued 1977.

Thank you for your quick reply. It is very helpful.  Now - please pardon my ignorance - what is meant by ice lip jug?    Thanks again!  Garnet

what is meant by ice lip jug?

An ice-lip jug is a jug where the top is pinched in at the sides of the pouring lip to make it almost a spout, wide enough to allow liquid through but narrow enough to stop ice cubes from falling into the drink with a splash!

:lol:

I always thought those were Sangria jugs, and the lips were to stop the fruit falling in! Thanks, Leni, I've learned something today. :D

Thanks everyone for the comments & help.  Special thanks to Ivo- I was glad you linked me to the picture - my tumblers are exactly like the one in the picture - BUT my "jug" is not like that - mine does not have the long neck & is a little lighter in color & does not have so much of the milk color around the top.  Actually, I have had it packed up for 8 yrs.  Is it possible to post a picture of mine on this board & perhaps I will learn a little more about it.  I also have a small bon-bon (?) dish in the same color.  I have a yellow (vaseline?)  fan shaped vase.  I had a beautiful blue candy dish , but broke the bowl part last year.   Thanks for all the help.  Garnet

My vaseline vase looks just like the one in the link below - except mine is yellow/vaseline.
