Title: Breughel uranium
Post by: Ivo on August 15, 2006, 01:39:46 PM
SO - can anyone tell me what this is? A vase, 18 cms (=7")  high, base colour uranium yellow (glows like mad) decorated with schwarzlot? by hand; colours filled in by hand. The pictiure is a Breughel drinking scene

Very nice Ivo. It looks like a pale amber uranium to me, maybe same source as Dave's cut and engraved stem

Thanks Christine - it is indeed a pale amber uranium but it is thinwalled and blown in an open mould; the more I look at the shape the more I think "Leerdam".  I don't think there is much similarity with the cut & engraved item Dave has posted - other than the colour chemistry....

Hi Ivo,I have a vase similar to yours, same size, amber colour with all the crazing on the surface. It flouresces brilliantly under U/V light. The only difference is, mine has a galleon in full sail on the front.I too do not know the maker or the year of manufacture.Kind regards,Kay.I have sent two photo to yobunny gallery but unsure of how to attatch to this message.

Thanks Kay - that is obviously the same maker, the same style. I think we can only be patient and wait until someone comes along with the answer.....

Hi Kay, the trick is to look underneath your photo on GlassGallery to the bit which says File Information: and in there is a line that says URL:  with a web address alongside it. Copy and paste that URL into your message and it'll show up as an active link to your image as it does in Ivo's post above.  8)

blown in an open mould.

Do you mean a two piece mould? You couldn't get it out of an open mould

sorry for technical inaccuracy - it has to be a 2-piece turning mould which is open at the top. The piece has a cut-off rim, neatly polished and actually the only place where you can see the green shimmer of uranium.

Check out this ashtray: http://glassgallery.yobunny.org.uk/displayimage.php?pos=-3116

Thickwalled, bottom cut and polished flat; rim cut & polished, and a slot for a ciggie on top, also cut & polished.
Clear crystal (no Uranium this time) finished in a bright marigold iridescence; black enamel (schwarlot) crazing; and a hand enameled coat of arms (two-tailed lion rampant clutching a telegraph pole).

I'm sure one of you will go "AHA!" - but then again.....
