Title: Murano Gondola
Post by: adam20 on August 25, 2012, 01:36:42 PM
I see there are new versions of this on eBay - I think this is old. 7" long by 3.25" high with gold to clear glass tail and front -lovely  canes to main body with a deep ruby glass base - wondered if anyone recognised the maker, its beautufully made.

Thanks Adam

Just a thought, after a few googles - could this be A.V.E.M?

Hi

I would definitely agree with A.V.E.M and the pattern or technique used is known as TUTTI FRUTI.  A technique which narrows it down quite distinctly to A.V.E.M's as it is one of the furnaces classic identifyting features

I disagree that it is AVeM. Many companies did tutti frutti. The design and murrines don't look like anything I've seen for AVeM. I personally have doubts that the piece is from Murano. I haven't seen the gondola before, so cannot say for sure.

Thanks

There are many gondolas on ebay, none I can see with labels but enough sommerso ones for me to think it is a Murano shape. I was sure that these canes were classic Murano, it appears to be a small ashtray with rests on either side.

Hi,
I'm sorry, but I suppose it is from China (I should see it from real to be 100% sure).
In Venice you can see so many imported items with similar multicolors murrina: vases, paperweights, small animals.
There are 5-6 importers and they are sold for very low wholesale prices (few Euros).

Sincerely

Thanks Alex. Another Chinese piece LOL. I paid like £10 for it so no great loss, it was speculative anyway.

I was looking on your website and noticed your lamp work goblets. I wonder if you could look at this one of mind and say if its Venetian or not.

Hi,
I don't know if that piece was made in Venice, but I can tell that it is not the classic soft Murano glass.
It should be a kind of Borosilicate, a much harder glass.
There are some venetian glassmakers using this quality of glass, but it is a little bit out of our tradition.
(The goblets that you see in our webpages, are all in Murano soft glass).

Ciao
