I have just read here (http://members.iimetro.com.au/~wdelahoy/CGCAA/Gallery%203.htm) that Split diamond was made by Davi[d]son (sic), scroll down. David Doty says unknown manufacturer. Anyone any thoughts? Did Davidson make carnival as a rose bowl in Hobstar reversed is also attributed to Davi[d]son. I'm posting without researching as I now have work to do and will forget otherwise ::)

I believe that this is down to Bill Edwards (Carnival Encyclopedia) who many years ago, "invented" a firm called Davison. It was a case of Chinese whispers (he got a letter from someone who mentioned Davidson and he then mispelled it, and so on and so on).
To cut a very, very long story short - there is no evidence that Davidson (or Davison) made Carnival Glass.
There's a mountain of absolute rubbish in books and websites about Carnival. Much of it possibly partially accounts for my blood pressure problems. I couldn't even begin to start correcting the mistakes in some of the books, there are so many. One thing that especially irks me is when I have done lots of research and I then see the conclusion/result of all my work credited to someone else!

:o That's disgraceful Glen, how do you combat this?
-
Sue, it's almost impossible to combat it. Carnival Glass is so widely written about. It does get me very upset at times. There was one instance when we did actually manage to get a published retraction/correction that went into a printed slip that was issued in one new book edition (I can't name names). But other than that I can only hope that the truth will ultimately win.

I've done my bit of work - I hadn't realised it was so teeny - so that's saved me a wild goose chase, even if it is a quiet time at work. I must admit I had my doubts. Thank you Glen  We really appreciate you, and hope we don't raise your blood pressure too often. I have two carnival items I may need your help on, more looking to do yet though.

 ARH Glen, do you put all of your research onto your web site? or do you hold some back for when you publish the world's most comprehensive guide to carnival glass, discounting all the other rubish printed before? i blxxxy would, plagiarism is one of my pet hates, it really makes me angry when someone steals the hard work of other's, claiming it to bo their own >:( thats when my pressure goe's up.

Sue:- Steve and I have already written three large hardbacks on Carnival Glass (published by Schiffer).
http://www.geocities.com/carni_glass_uk_2000/INDEXbooks.html
We also self published our own Carnival Glass research journal for 8 years - plus a softback on Czech Carnival and two (soon to be three) CDs on Sowerby. We may do another big book in the future - but meanwhile, our recent aim has been to "publish" our research on the internet through our website. We've uncovered so much in the last couple of years that we believe the right thing to do is to let others learn about it as quickly as possible. It also serves to update our three books, so that anyone who has them can check to see what new information we have uncovered.

Would that make a notation in my copy of 'Glass signatures, tradesmarks and tradenames' plausible?
The listing is George DAVISON and Son, Ltd. Makes no mention of Davi[D]son.

I know Glen, i was being a bit tongue in cheek :P i already have one of your books.
-
oooops! Sorry Sue :-[ :) :-[ (blame a lack of coffee)

No Problem Glen, i was just imagening people going to the library to get the correct information, and opening this huge tome on carnival glass ;D ;D " THE WORLD'S GREATEST ENCYCLOPEDIA ON CARNIVAL GLASS" and no one can argue with that ;)
