Title: Opalescent Squirrel.....? Murano ??Maker
Post by: rosieposie on December 19, 2010, 03:19:05 PM
Hello all you Murano glass specialists....can you help identify the maker of theis lovely Opaline/opalescent  Squirel please?

He is  quite chunky and about 5" high.....very nicely made IMHO,  but no makers mark.
I have come to the Murano section, because I think it looks more like Murano glass than French.  I am happy to be corrected.

Thanks in advance for any help. :kissy:

Nice squirrel, Rosieposie! I believe your squirrel is Murano as well.  It reminds me of my elephant by Franco Moretti.  I guess because they both sit in an upright position.  I personally like your squirrel.  I don't have a clue as to who made your squirrel  but it is nicely made.

Hi again tam bam....he is lovely, isn't he....I had to turn the flash off otherwise the twig he was holding didn't show up.
Moretti eh?  I didn't even think of him....I will investigate more of his work.  The good thing about all this snow, is we are housebound so a good excuse to surf the net for hours!!

Merry Christmas, and thanks for the lead..... :ru: :sn: :fc: :sn: :ru:

These animals are tough, aren't they? I don't know who made your squirrel. Two companies that I know about did some cased opaline animals -- Aureliano Toso and Fratelli Toso. There may, of course, been others. These two companies would be a good place to start the Murano research. Much luck. I still have a directory full of unidentified animals!

Thanks Anita!!  Yes, they are tough....trouble is,  all the makers taught each other,  so there are elements of almost all the makers in these pieces.
I was hoping that the Opaline glass would be unusual enough to help identify it, so I will research the Toso family and see what transpires.

If you want any pictures of him for the Murano Zoo,  please say....you are welcome to any I post her on the GMB.

I can try to take better ones if you need them.

We can wait until it's identified to put it in the zoo. I considered once including an "unattributed" section, but it was too large and not very helpful.

I believe the biggest obstacle in attributing animals is that many companies did the same designs. For example, everybody did the dog and cat sitting that look always identical company to company. Some companies add a bow or some flourish that helps distinguish theirs from others. The companies didn't patent their designs, so there was nothing to keep other companies from copying a popular design.

I doubt that there were many companies who made the cased opaline glass like your squirrel. If you find another, you can be pretty sure it is the right company.  :)

I'm now thinking Barbini Anita, as this chappie is a bit podgier than the Toso ones I have seen....it might be that the stick in his hand is a clue....like you say,  a bow or an embellishment can be like a signature??

On with the search!!

Where are all the Murano buffs....snowed in?  We are, which is why I have so much time to do this at the moment!

Alas, I do not feel there are many Murano buffs right now. The only ones around are the hard-core folks. We're in one of those glass troughs. The Murano boards are quiet. Besides it is Christmas week, so people are busy traveling and cooking... which reminds me, I have a pan of fudge to make.

Yum!! If Heathrow wasn't closed,  I'd be round in a flash for fudge!!

Happy Christmas Anita,  and thank you for all your help this year.

Rosie, I wonder if your beastie is supposed to be a woodchuck. The twig would be a play on the name, though we know a woodchuck won't chuck wood. Some of the American companies did molded woodchucks. The tail is a bit much for a woodchuck, but the full features and body look a lot like one.

Hi Anita and Martin....point taken,  but I can't for the life of me find a glass woodchuck, and he is so like a squirrel and so Murano-ish,  and every time I look at Seguso Animals,  I see the same 'chunky' style.

I have found a monkey and a cat in the same material...opaline glass,by Seguso,  so I am going to keep looking and not be disheartened.  Anybody find anything similar,  please say so.....please!! :thud:

In the meantime,  Happy Holidys everyone :kissy: and see you back here after Boxing day!! :hi:
