Title: help with signature please - ID = London Glassblowing Peter Layton
Post by: josordoni on November 18, 2006, 11:40:42 PM
I can't make out this signature, squint as I may - it is on a small (about 4 ins tall inc stopper) blue green perfume bottle with a wonderful texture to the outside surface - the stripes are slightly raised.

here is the signature:

here is the bottle

any help gratefully received!

Colourwise it looks Mdina-ish I think?

Exactly what I was thinking Anne but it doesn't look like Michael Harris' signature which is very neat and readable - where's Sue I wonder? I'm sure she'd know ....

I've got a lot of Mdina around at the moment, and this is quite different. the blue is much more of a true royal blue rather than the rather kingfisher blue Mdina use, and the texture of the surface is different as well. The stopper has a long shaft with a ground matt texture, and a flat bottom end which is quite un-Mdinish.

Here is another picture of the bottle that shows the texture better - its on my website so I can put a bigger picture on than on the Glass Gallery.  You can see that the deep blue and green are almost flat straps surface applied.

And here is the length of the stopper

Hi,
I hope you don't mind I zoomed in close on a copy of your photo and traced the lines as they are in white to see if I could make out what it says. I still can't, but maybe someone else will be able to read it. Nice looking item though. --- Mike

Thank you Mike!

Almost looks like Brierley, but I wouldn't expect even their studio pieces to be hand signed?  Certainly seems to be dated 1965 doesn't it?

I would say the last letters were definitely 'ley' but what the first are I can't make out!  Could it be P followed by r u or u r?   :?   Purley?    (Say no more!   )

I've not got a clue!

Not Mdina.

It does look a little like IoWSG Seaward, but the stopper is wrong. It also looks a little like Allister Malcolm's "Ripple" pattern, but to tell which this may be, or not, I'd need to see it "in vitro". Seaward and Ripple are quite different, but from a picture, I'm stumped!

Is there any optical texture in the glass? Allister Malcolm's Ripple has hexagon shapes in the glass.
