the barrel is open at top and base - oil creeps out as the stem is a cross in horizontal cut

Pamela, does the narrower glass piece slide down inside the metal? and does the larger glass piece screw onto the metal?  What does the inscription say? I can only read part of it.

Anne, yes, the barrel is screwed into the metal, the smaller glass piece (horizontally cut: a cross) is to be inserted into the barrel prior to screwing the latter onto the metal.
The red rubber ring is old and does not close perfectly anymore, perhaps it did at one time.
The smaller glass piece 'falls' through the metal holder and touches the table's surface then.
the inscription is something like:
Mueller Mulhouse Breveté SGDG

I had googled all Switzerland already, thinking it could be a Swiss Patent - unfortunately without success.

Mulhouse could be France and Switzerland BTW

Thank you for your interest Anne - very much appreciated!  :D

Thanks Pamela. I found the meaning of two bits of the inscription (which you may know already but I'll include for completeness):

"Breveté" = patented.
"S.G.D.G." (Sans garantie du Gouvernement) is a disclaimer required by the government of France stating that it does not guarantee enforcement of the claimed patent.

With the open ends and multipart construction I wondered if it could be some kind of flow valve - would the narrow glass end take a tube slid over it?

Or could it be a sort of pie-funnel - like a more sophisticated version of the pie blackbirds?

It's certainly a puzzler!

It must be some kind of dosimeter but something is missing - not quite sure what. Perhaps a EU patent search on the French translation of dosimeter.

Tee hee, Lynne.  :-)

It looks to me as though the inscription says Weller, not Mueller.  Not that that appears to help, going by Google.

Pamela, what does the exact inscription say?

Could it be a kind of reusable syringe? For agricultural use, perhaps?  Does it look as though you could fit a needle to the nozzle?

Well-spotted Chris, it does look like Weller. Is there another word before that  too?

I'm still inclined toward some sort of valve - perhaps a pressure release valve for a gas rather than a flow valve for a liquid?

Gottit!!!

Pamela, you were right.  A mustard pump is what it is!

Argit is the manufacturer.  What's the betting that a Mr Herrmann Weller once ran a cafe in Mulhouse...

I know what you mean, Pamela.  I have my own doubts, too.  It seems an unnecessarily weird way to dispense mustard.

But there are quite a few such items on eBay France, and they're all down as "moutardiers".

Of course, maybe there's a French version of Miller's and everyone has taken what they say as gospel truth :-)
