I am not even sure that he is made from glass! And his eyes are grotesque. The rest of him has been in the wars. He does have a stand to rest on.
But he must be glass there is nothing else that I can think of, that would have his qualities.

I go for patte de verre but am prepared to fall flat in my face here!
The blue only shows itself when the light falls at the right angle.
T'was for that reason that I was enchanted and so possess a bashed fish, with barely a fin to stand on.

Perhaps it's a mineral like "Blue John".
Though it's eye's look like glass so perhaps the rest is glass.
I love it. Where did you catch it?
-
It's a lovely fishy Ruth. It looks rather like blue pearl granite to me. I'd have said this is what it is, but I'm not sure you can carve granite into something this fine... :?
-
Hi Ruth
Well spotted, Max. I'd vote for blue pearl granite, too.

I only know because we almost had that for our worktops, I think it's beautiful. :D

try this test.....
pick it up....does it feel cold in your hands (as in, colder than your hands)?
If yes, it is probably a mineral/rock.

Dare I say it?   Tap it (gently) on your teeth. IMHO glass feels different from anything else!
OTOH, maybe it's just me who can feel the difference between glass, plastic, minerals, etc. by 'biting' it
OK, I'm a 'nutter' - IGMC

Funnily enough I bought a Labradorite necklet in Portobello Road when I was in London last Saturday, was given a piece of blue pearlite granite by a friend on Monday and ordered my dark green pearlite worktops this morning. When I get all three examples together, I will post a picture of them. My vote for this fish is the mineral Labradorite, which is not the same as the pearlite granite worktop stuff, (I don't think, anyway! :? )
-
Yes, he feels cold. My teeth are not sensitive in a useful way!
He does not look quite like the other items displayed but having seem them, I am prepared to concede that he is, carved from rock. The like of which I have not seem before, other than having encountered 'Blue John' in a previous life.
The maker got him just right, apart from the sinous suggestion of movement, in certain lights he is ordinary, of earthy/marine colours. When the light hits there is the most surprisingly intense pale blue lights up, just as fish scales do.
I think he is a carp and I am wondering in which country he came from but that is another quest and a different Board perhaps!
Thanks for your help and I know what kind of work benches I want in my kitchen next.

DEFINITELY IT IS LABRADORIT - China? or Norway?
-
glassy eyes would confirm China imho

Pamela, the eyes have me curious too, they could be glass or porcelain.
I will have another look when it gets light. What does imho stand for?
I am going to google labradorit some more now! cheers Ruth
-
IMHO = in my humble opinion

larvikite = Norwegian Blue Pearl Granite
-
Norwegian Blue
Lovely plumage!
Leni

Leni: I join you and your testing method of materials - it always works! Normally a touch does...
Ruth and all here: Labradorit is too soft (Mohs-Haerte) for being Granit and I bet your fish is 'Feldspat = Labradorit' which can be easily carved like that.
-
sorry not granite - check the Larvikite technical reference for all variants and names it goes by.
-
I'm googled out and reckon that labradorite it is. Larkivite has some similar properties but does not quite fit, despite #
Labradorite
# Receptive
# Element: Air/Spirit
# Projection, shapeshifting, celestial energy, astral magick.
Larkivite
# Projective
# Element: Water
# Darkness, rain, shadows...strange deep energy, similar to labradorite but grounding, rather than ascendant.

This is him.

I give up - science lost.
-
No, despite the other stuff, which is just a google along the way and was in favour of larkivite being waterly ! Just a diversion.
The link under that convinced me. That is how it looks, in shadow and in light.
r, a scientist, well, sort of, on a good day, perhaps, omg need therapy. Time for a holiday! In Labrador would be nice, with a hammer.

guess what the official name for Labradorite is? No prizes as the answer was made available early on in this thread.

It's Feldspar! :D Why no prize? :( I want a prize! :x Pamela spelt it wrong, anyway
Leni
-
sorry Leni, I did not spell wrong but did not know the English spelling: feldspar (E) is feldspat (G)
If I do not know the right translation E/G here - I dare to submit German and reckognize that everybody understands - like Anorak 8) :P

Sorry Leni, no gain - the answer is Larvikite.

Here are the promised pictures of my larkovite and labradorite.
"dark emerald pearl granite", (the big piece)
"light blue pearl granite" (the small sliver) and
labradorite (the pendant - both cabochons)
It is hard to capture their true beauty on camera, particularly the labradorite, but should be enough for you to decide about your fish!

Many thanks, it is labradorite.
I also went to a crystal shop and had a look round and it all convinces me that's what it is. Now I just need to find out when and where it was made.
Cheers Ruth.
