Title: Kosta Signed Lindstrand (full name) LG 348 B Seaweed Vase?
Post by: Ohio on December 16, 2006, 06:24:38 AM
Hi. Am seeking assistance/opinions on the vase below. I don't think I'm a complete dunce on Kosta, but this one has me puzzled. It's script signed Vicke Lindstrand, Kosta LG 348 B. Now this is a three digit production so I'm assuming earlier 50's. The LG obviously is engraved, however all the Seaweed series Lindstrand vases I've ever seen have been high 4 digit numbers made in the mid to late 60's & the vase shapes are different than this one & certainly no engraved fish. The 348 I would gather may be 1953-54, but the "B" (and it is a "B" not an eight) is a full 1/8" below & to the right of the "8" (the last digit on the vase). The vase shape is short at 7 1/2" in height & 4 1/2" diameter & the seaweed in not the type one sees in the mid 60's Seaweed vases, although it is Seaweed with the accompaning bubbles. I guess my questions are, is this a very early 50's Seaweed vase? & what does the "B" indicate (the initial of the engraver perhaps?) Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks, Ken

Just looked it up in "Swedish Glass Factories - Production catalogues".

It's exactly as you described it, in the 1962/3 catalogue.

The B is the fish, same vase with A has instead a "medusa" - jellyfish ?

LG (engraved) only have three numbers, you get 4 numbers with the LH bits.

height of both is 175 mm (6.8") - but being handmade I'd expect a bit of variation in height.

Taylog1 I very much appreciate the response & information. I do know of the "Swedish Glass Factories - Production catalogues", but to be honest the price of the book even used is quite a hefty amount of money...at least to me anyway. I have a favor to ask & I promise I will not bother you anymore...I have a huge Kosta 627 LS Lindstrand (14 1/2" & 12 1/2 lbs in weight) that I've been trying to get information on. The only thing I've been able to pick up is a production date of 1958-59 & supposedly part of the "Dark Magic" series. One gentleman from Sweden informed me that the vase is highly unusual & to the best of his knowledge only a few were made. Can you tell me if at least the date is correct of 1958-59? I'd very much appreciate a confirmation if it's listed in your book & again I hate to ask, but I've come up with nothing being able to confirm the date in 6 years of trying. A picture of the vase is below. Again I thank you.  Ken

I reckon you're probably right.
This style (black and cut spiral) only seems to be in the 1959 catalogue.
Previous catalogue in book is 1955/6 so I'd assume designed in 1957 - 9

There is a v similar bowl (LS 628) 190mm * 265mm, another bowl (LS 629 - 140mm. one sold in Feb on ebay for $320) decanter and sherry glass (LS 665 and 666).

There's no LS 627 - which would stack up with only a few being made and not going into production. Whe  the missing numbers pop up on ebay they often command good prices.

finally, I've also seen a taller vase on ebay before, but can't put my hands on the details - if I do I'll update the post

Again I cannot thank you enough taylog1 for the confirmation. Evidently the Swedish gentleman was correct since he indicated he could not find a 627 listed anywhere in Kosta records. This was a couple of years ago & I did receive another email about two weeks after his initial email. He had shown the pic to another Swedish Kosta collector in Sweden & the other gentleman was of the opinion that the LS 627 might have been a trade show piece from the London trade show that was sold after the show ended which he indicated was not uncommon rather than go to the trouble of shipping back the stock, it was sold off at the show. Whether or not this is the case I'll never know, but at least I have confirmation that it does not show in factory records. I'll keep this old dog as I'll probably not see another one.

You are teriffic going to the trouble of helping me out. Have a Merry & safe holiday season.   Ken

Hello, my first post but have been lurking and enjoying the site.
The Seaweed vase, would the B indicate the Brussels Expo of 1958?

Hi Glassic. See taylog1's above post dated December 17, 2006, 10:54:03 AM to me for an explaination of the "B" & also what an "A" would mean. Ken

Excuse me for using your thread Ken.  :)  Welcome to posting on the forum Glassic, it's great that you've taken the plunge at last!  Why don't you start a thread in the Cafe and tell us about yourself, and what glass you're interested in?  :)

I'm inclined to agree on the 'B'.
Though...I still have a vague recollection of a Sandinavian designer using B to denote Brussels.

Thanks for the welcome.
