Title: Can anyone identify this please.
Post by: printer181 on April 21, 2012, 03:35:06 AM
This was part of my moms collections and I have been searching the internet for days trying to find out who made this and what it is. Its very heavy and assume its some kind of paperweight.  Can anyone shed any light on this?  This pictures are of the actual piece and of the signature.
Help if you can.
Thanks

Hello Printer181,  welcome to the board.....lets hope we can help you.
Can we assume you are in USA as you say Mom rather than Mum?  It might help a little if we know your geographical location.

Dimensions might help us as well.
It is a nice clear signature.....someone will know I'm sure....but in the meantime I'll start searching..............sometimes it takes a little while,  so don't think we have given up on you,  will you?

Yes, I am in the US.   I tried searching Desmond  and all other possibilities but nothing came up.
The dimensions are 4 1/4 x 4 1/4 x 7 1/4
Weight is just shy of 13 lbs
thanks for your help

Thanks for the dimensions....if they are inches,  did you really mean 13lbs?

The name etched on it could either be the srtists first name or surname and could have originated from any art glass studio,. there are many glass makers the World over producing weights and art glass in both major and minor studios and even small private individuals in their own back yards and products from these may never be identified outside their own area unless they become 'discovered' and join a group of artists in a well known and established art glass studio so attempting to research them through the internet, unless they have their own site, may be fruitless, just take satisfaction that if a weight or piece of art glass has an individuals signature etched on it then they were proud enough of it to put their name on it and if you like it that makes at least two of you.

Hi printer181, welcome to the Board.

I cannot help with ID of this piece, but I have some questions ...

  • Is it currently shown the right way up?
  • Is it carved (or formed) in some way to make a definite design or "image". From the one photo I cannot easily make out what it looks like.
  • Do you have any other photos of it showing how it looks from other sides?

I'm still reeling from 13 lbs...that's six packets if sugar in UK packs!!, but then it is 130 cubic inches....wow!!

John,  says that if it is solid and is lead crystal  it could weigh .155lbs per cubic inch,  so 13lbs now seems very feasible....I am so gobsmacked,  no wonder postage is so high!!

Attached are some more pics at different angles.  It definately is hand carved and I would assume its a very expensive piece since everything my late mom bought was of excellent quality.  Thanks for all of your help with this.  I have listed a few pieces of her collection on ebay that I knew who the artists were.

Thanks Rosie.  My mom(mum) has so many items(200+) that she collected over the years.  Unfortunately we have to sell some due to financial reasons.  If you can access ebay where your are, you can see some of items that i have.  Its really a shame I have to sell these, but I have 4 children and they are approaching college age and im sure my mom would want them to have a good education.

I'm sure you are right Printer181,  I hope my collection is used constructively like that when I pass them on.

Why not leave a note on the Marketplace section here with your eBay name?  (I think that is in order?)  then we can all have a look to see if there is anything we really have to have......at least that way you will be certain your Mother's treasures are going to loving and appreciative homes.

Can we have a picture from the uncarved corner, as that's probably how you are supposed to view it

Not quite. You are supposed to look through the glass to the carving at the back. Stand it upright so the long plain edge is pointing at you and you can see the ship in front of the iceberg or cliff and take a photo from directly in front. If we know what the subject is, we may be able to search better.

You could send him a picture of yours by email and ask if it is one of his.....artists change tack and often their style alters significantly over the years......wight be worth a try and then at least you would have a definitive answer.??
