Title: Glass Plate Roberts 1900
Post by: Tony H on January 19, 2005, 07:25:49 AM
Hi
Another plate, this one has the design made up of small raised dots, and is for Gen Roberts entry into Pretoria June 5 1900.

Has anyone seen this one and who was the maker.

Many thanks for any help.

Hi,

This is a common design in the UK, examples can be found at most glass fairs.  Vivien Walker and Susan Biss in their book "Pressed Glass Commemoratives" show two versions, one with the scalloped edge, the other with a smooth edged.

Unfortunately the plate is not marked, signed; neither was a Reg Design taken our, therefore the manufacturer is not known.

Never positively identified but given Greener & Co prolific manufacture of commemorative items I would think they were a fair bet

These are cup plates which were a rage around the turn of the century esp. in the US. An extensive book on the subject does exist the title is - wait for it - cup plates. Allegedly these were used for depositing your tea cup while you drank your tea from the saucer.

Thanks but not this one, I forgot to add a size in my original post which would be about 9-10 inches in diameter it is packed away somewhere so I cannot be sure.
