A large and very heavy vase of good quality. 14" approx - I think it's Caithness, but can't find it in Mark Hills book. It just looks Caithness. No marks to base.

It does, doesn't it?
It looks like a variation on the un-named pattern which we've been discussing recently.
Is it finished off the correct way for Caithness?
-
Yes. The rim is smooth polished and the bottom is typical Caithness in technique.

The polished rim is a strong indication, I think.
Who else would finish a vase such as this off with polishing? I would have imagined a heat finish would be most likely if this were a studio piece.
-
Ok, I will play devils advocate then. It is too big and the similar Caithness patterns are not clear cased. ;)

Could it be Gozo? That would be my first thought, rather than Caithness.
-
Gozo isn't normally cased and wouldn't have a polished rim.
I have also noticed recently that the quality of Gozo leaves very much to be desired, this is too good for Gozo.
Devil's Advocation welcome, John!
But remember, this isn't a true production range - it could well be a.n. other experimental bit from it... the colours and the way they're used, are very, very Caithnessy.

Thanks all
Just to add I got my sizes mixed up. It's only 10 inches high. Which I think is better for it being Caithness.
