I've never seen murrines with faces!! ...
A search on the Board for "face cane" will locate several threads from the past that have discussed similar canes (or murrines).

Some of the past threads have offered China and India as sources of some types of face canes. Ivo's cup (I assume it was the same one) was also mentioned in one of the threads.

There was also an interesting discussion on an ID request where Ancient Egyptian was considered for face canes used as eyes for a "figurine", and a link to a website covering Egyptian face canes in beads was given. But I still think the canes for those eyes were modern!

Hi, I never mix business with pleasure and never promote my eBay account on here, though it's no secret I am a glass dealer so like most pieces I place on here it will be listed at some point.

Edited to add:
hmmm, I typed all the below in italics then realised Barovier was the id for this.
Is there a reference source for that please?

I bought Chris' plate and am no further on ideas for it.
I don't think my plate is a Murano piece.  The rim is cut not fire polished.

But I did find a previous post from Kev with a plate on it, so thought I'd link it here.
According to that post the plate was bought in India and not sold as old but no definitive on where it was made.

However I have found a silver coloured item that has a look to me of 'made in India' that also has face canes in it.

Not quite the same as my plate. I think they are part of a complex cane slice with millefiori flowers in it and an eye cane.
I'm wondering if these might have been made in Murano but bought in to add into the item or in the case of my plate, if it were made elsewhere, bought in to make the plate.

Link here to a thread where Alpha says that the smiley face canes in that particular piece are from China.
Is this a confirmed identification of them please?

N.B. The smiley face on that piece does not appear to be the same as on my plate or on Ivo's small vase or glass.
The faces on my plate and on Ivo's piece DO appear to be the same.

My apologies - just doing some more searching and went back to check the post from Kev and I realised I  misquoted what Kev said   :-[
His post commented on beads (bought in India) and a plate (bought separately)-
i.e. no mention of that plate being bought in India as I mistakenly said earlier.
This is a link to a photograph of said plate

So I think I'm looking for a source for the Barovier identification please.

Edited - ah, I have finally found another thread with more discussion on it:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,2454.msg18157.html#msg18157

But no definitive Barovier source I don't think?

is it my imagination or are the face beads on the first two pictures or at least the first one on the left, the same cane as one of those in my plate?
These are being sold as vintage (c 1970s ) Indian beads.

I've added some more pictures of the plate as I think there are two faces - the one with dark nose and red mouth and another in pink.

I have a question as well:  The rim of this bowl is cut and ground not polished. Very thin really and quite uneven.  Is that typical of Murano makers?
And how was the bowl made to create a thin cut rim?  I'm curious because of another bowl I will post separately on.  I made a bowl earlier this year and it ended up with a fire polished or rather, rounded rim with the pontil mark on the base where I cracked it off.
I can't image how you would make a bowl with a cut rim?  is it blown, cracked off the pontil rod and then where cracked off, opened out flat over a shaped support?
