Title: Oiva Toikka??
Post by: rosieposie on August 05, 2008, 11:22:24 AM
More help needed please..... :-*

I have about a dozen of these lovely birds, and am thinking of bidding for this one   http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180271187788
However, my reason for hesitating is that I have never attributed Oiva Toikka as the designer, but thought they were made at the Taidelasi Glassworks in Espoon, Finland.
There are only a few hours to go, but can anybody out there tell me who the designer is?

I had one signed by Oiva Toikka. They are also shown in the Finnish Design Lasin catalogue.

I am pretty sure this was not designed by Oiva Toikka.  All the Toikka birds are signed on the bottom as far as I know.  The final price would have been okay (or actually quite good) for a Toikka bird.  Not so sure, however, for this one.  Nice colour though.

I tend to agree Tuija, here is a link to  my collection, the one in the foreground, left, shown separately, is identical to the one that was sold, and it has an Art Glass Team Finland sticker on it (like several of the others), and no Oiva Toikka signature.
I have individual pictures of all the birds if you would like them posted here.......just let me know.

I don't really know enough about these to make a sweeping generalisation....so do feel free to correct me....but
so far as I know the bird shown has a couple of characteristic features, both slightly technical, which so far as `I am aware are not usually to befound in Oiva Toikka birds.

1. The head has been made from an over-gather, by dipping one side of the first stage bubble into the furnace.

2. The tail has been made by shearing, rather than by using tweezers. Thus the tail has two elements.

Both these features suggest that it is not by Oiva Toikka.

Yes, they are good observations, and the overgather is certainly not typical of O.T. in my experience (albeit very limited), but the tail is only like this on some of them.

If you look at the picture I sent, many of them just have a single tail feather, and are pinched, not sheared.

I have pictured a few more, individually to see if this throws more light on the subject.

Two of those birds are actually Haparanda Glasbruk Swedish birds: 1st & 2nd.

One of them is of unknown origin, a metallic knobbly finish with pinched 'wings' on either side:3rd.

Nearly all the others are either labelled Taidelasi Oy and are from Espoon, Finland, or Art Glass Team Finland.

I bought  the tiny white one from the USA recently, sadly, it has no label: 4th.

Sorry!! :-[Slight technical hitch there, this is number 3!
It's always the most interesting one this happens to, isn't it! ::)

What is your source for Riihimäki ?
I can't find much on Jussis Glass - but according to this list of Finnish glass makers (http://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luettelo_Suomen_lasitehtaista) it is situated in Maarianhamina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mariehamn) - which is quite some distance from Riihimäki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Riihim%C3%A4ki).

BTW - your bird is also depicted in the Bridges-Nichols Collection (http://bn-collection.com/main.php?g2_return=%2Fmain.php&g2_formUrl=%2Fmain.php&g2_authToken=0e79d7d1bdd9&g2_view=search.SearchScan&g2_form%5BformName%5D=search_SearchBlock&g2_form%5BsearchCriteria%5D=jussis&g2_form%5BuseDefaultSettings%5D=1) (concentrating in Toikka birds).

Hi Wuff!!

Wow, what a wonderful list of makers,  I have saved it for future reference... and I was pleased to see how many of the Glass Studios I knew of and even had glass from!!  Thanks for that.

My bird is signed Jussis Glas Riihimäki... in the underside, as well as the label, so I wonder if the Studio moved at sometime??
Iif you put Jussis Glas into Google you do get several of these birds come up with the  Riihimäki location next to the signature.

There is a Jussis Glas bird on eBay at the moment with  Riihimäki  signed on the base, very like one of mine.Have a look,  I would be interested to know what you think.

The Bridges-Nichols Collection does say that this bird (like Michelle's) is often mistaken for Oiva Toikka, but that it is not one of his.

Michelle & Wuff, I was just taking pictures of my Scandi collection and discovered something quite unexpected!! :o

The signature on my bird does NOT read Riihimäki !!

I put talcum powder on it to take a better look and it says... Teskavoski
I can't believe it!
There are some, including the one on eBay at the moment, that do clearly say Riihimäki, but, mine doesn't!!

It just goes to show, that sometimes we read and see what we expect to see, not what is ACTUALLY there!

I am guilty of this... and am off to eat humble pie!  :-[

Tesvakoski would be just a few miles North of Riihimäki.

Oh Wuff,  Thank you so much... I was looking for a glass artist with that name!!  Double 'humble pie' for supper tonight!!  :-[ :-[
And I have now seen that it is Tervakoski, with an 'r' not an 's'...  :-[

The Bidges-Nichols Collection shows two Toikka birds with a "Napapiirin Lasi" label or even signed "O.Toikka Napapiirin" (http://bn-collection.com/v/NAPAPIIRIN/) - both made at Nuutajärvi/Iittala. Now - Napapiirin is Northern Finland, and the explanation given by Bib Bridges is that these birds were commissioned by a company there, or the city itself - which is why this name was added (in one case) to the signature.

Could it be that the Jussi birds were signed in a similar way - naming the location of the commissioning company/city, and not the location of Jussi Glas ???.

That's a very interesting thought Wuff, and one well worth consideration... my only reservation is that some of the silver streaked birds are signed Riihimaki and some Tervakoski, even though they are the same design.   ???

It is quite complicated...

After Riihimäen Lasi stopped blowing glass the workers seem to have worked all over for different companies. Here's a link to one professional who has worked for Jussis Keramik Oy (Jussi's Glass) in Tervakoski and Ahvenanmaa (=Maarianhamina). And has his own studio in Riihimäki again.

http://www.liikastensukuseura.fi/jlasi.htm (http://www.liikastensukuseura.fi/jlasi.htm)

I know, it is in Finnish but you might get something out of it using a translator, if you wish.

I bought a Jussis Glas bird the other day and it came in its original box. The details on it may be of interest.

I suppose it is a blue swan? (as it says so handwritten, in Finnish :) )

Thanks for the translation. I must say it doesn't much look like a swan and it's grey! Perhaps, then, not the original box.
