Title: glass collection
Post by: Glassyone on July 12, 2005, 07:03:29 AM
I would be grateful if anyone could tell me of someone in the Wellington region who is expert enough and may be
willing  to help me catalogue my collection.
I am happy to pay for such help.

I have collected over 30 years, mostly in England  and have over a  hundred pieces. Some I have identified but much eludes me. I would like to do this so that my children have the information when they inherit.
Regards Ruth.

:D Hello Ruth :D
Picture No. 4 is Isle of Wight Studio Glass. The pattern is called (surprisingly) pink and purple swirl. It should have either a broken pontil mark, or an impressed mark on a circular bit of glass that has been put onto the pontil mark, depicting a gather of glass in a flame, or perhaps  a mark that looks like it has been impressed with a the head of a coach-bolt. It dates from the early '70's, designed by Michael Harris.

Picture No. 7,
top shelf, 3rd from the right,  a yellow and orange vase with swags is Swedish. (I don't know more than that)
bottom shelf, 4th from left, looks very like Nazeing - it's the right shape. possibly the pieces on either side are too, but best listen to Nigel Benson on this matter.

Pictures Nos. 5 and 11 look like the same vase, I've no idea what it is but I'm jealous!

Picture No.8, You'd best listen to Frank or Nigel Benson, or other experts on this type of glass on this board, as this is not my area but it all looks very Scottish-ish. The bottom left looks like Monart, top left looks a bit like John Deacons (to my inexpert eye) and the middle piece at the back looks like Strathearn. However, I think this picture might be a bit distended and is a bit out of focus on my screen.

The last couple of pictures wouldn't come up on my computer.

edited to change incorrect number  I've also managed to get more pictures, now. The green vase in picture 17 looks a bit like Loetz, but again, I'm not too hot on this sort of thing.

Edited to change numbers to fit with new layout.

Thanks Anne, you live near my mother, she is in Kirby Stephen!
I will try your link, in the mean time my partner has started a web page for me and is putting some pics up.

Not too far from Kirkby Stephen at all Ruth... if your mother's interested in glass as well, we have a small, newish Northern-Glassies list on Yahoo!

Thanks for the link to your pictures - I especially love the dark one on this page:
http://www.robertshaw.orcon.net.nz/glass10.html - can you tell me who made it please?

Thankyou all of you, you are a lovely group of people. I am somewhat overwhelmed by the response!  Over the next few weeks Robert and I will try and sort things out by following your good advice. We will take better pics and post as suggested.

Anne, I will send the link to this site to my mother, who does like glass but does not know much about it. On the subject of that dark piece, I have no idea who made it!

Many thanks Ruth.

Hi Ruth

Could you possibly post a photograph of the base of the piece in photograph 6 and the base of the left hand cylindrical vase in Photograph 13

Regards

Gareth

:D Hello,
Is that a signature I see on the bottom right of the vase in Pic. 11?? (same vase as pic. 5?)

:? :? I'm also confused about pic. No 2! Two very similar vases, one signed J. Ditchfield '80 and the other Hadeland Gro.B.S.
While John Ditchfield of Glassform did make things in a very similar vein, particularly back in the '80's, at this time, as far as I know, every piece of glass he made was not only signed by him, but individually numbered.

I know next to nothing about Hadeland.

Pic 8

Left. Pale green, blue at top - Czechoslovakian 1930's-50's value from $30
Orange green & Gold - Monart Glass, value $200-$400

Middle. Green and dk red?
And Orange/brown?
Both  - Unknown Czech or even stourbridge value from $30 each

Right. Orange gold, possibly Monart, need better pic. value $200++
Dark coloured, possibly Victorian English, needs better pic.

Pic 14

No idea but love it!

Pic 17

Centre - blue cylinder might be Strathearn, need beter pic and one of base

Pic 10: The two mother of pearl vases are in the style of Pallme Koenig, but I don't know enough to say whether they are definitely PK or a copy. They look mould blown and the rims ground - and the trail added, after unmoulding while still warm????? :?:

17: Left - again, that strapping looks a bit like PK, but you will need an expert to confirm that.

Hi Ruth,

Pic 6: WMF 'Ikora' glass, Germany, 1930's - unfortunately, missing its double-headed screw-in  chromed 'head' for bulb holders (note the thread to the inner rim of the chrome fitting).

Pic 7 - Top Shelf:  Item 6 (l to r) - see comments below. Item 11 - Czech 1930's.

Pic 7 - Bottom Shelf: Items 3, 4 & 5 (as item 6 above) - These are regarded by many as Nazeing. However, I have not been able to confirm that this is indeed the case. I even used one of these as an illustration in the 'Miller's Guide to Collecting the 50's and 60's' (like the green ovoid form with a clear bun form base that you have)   I gained some extra information just prior to holding the "Nazeing Glass and its Origins" exhibition, which threw doubt on their origin. I therefore question the attribution, but understand people's wish to use it.

Pic 8: I agree with Frank about the origins of these pieces.

Pic 10: Not in my normal remit, but the green and blue irridised piece looks like Loetz. Does it have a nicely polished out concave pontil?

Pic 14: Morag Gordon, England 1980's. These pieces normally have an incised signature to the base, along with other information (which illudes my mind at present). These pieces are particularly beautiful and if you can get them in the right light, stunning! How big is your version?

Kind regards, Nigel

pic 3.

Similar piece listed on Ebay a while back.

the description given was:

It is Czeckoslavakian, and is called Schlaumglas, and was the Bohemian answer to Ikora glas made in Germany (2 3/8" tall and 2 5/8"
in diameter).

My last two attempts at posts did not make it so I have followed advice and started posting one piece at a time.
Thank you all for your interest and help.

Hi Ruth - only just spotted your thread.  Great collection!
Collection 7 - third from the right is a "peacock" vase by Elme,  Sweden (1917-1970), c.1960s.  Two designers who worked there:- Hjordis Olsson & Charlotte Rude 1967-70.  Goodness knows where I got this info. from.  I managed to scrape it together, probably from different sources, when I bought my Elme peacock vase.

I had just discovered the 'Peacock' series but did not know about the designer's, so thanks for that!

How did I miss this thread? I think it's because it has a similar name to another thread.

Frank, it occurred to me that it would be quicker and easier to use the Glass Gallery, so shall I do that instead, as soon as is possible?
There is so much going on on this site, it is great but wow, what a lot to catch up with after a period away!
