Title: Uranium glass Swans
Post by: Littleblackhen on January 03, 2013, 05:07:47 PM
I have some interesting uranium glass swans, does anyone know who might have made them, or a date for them please?

Is the glass sort of semi-translucent?

If so, it appears to be a type of uranium glass that has only recently been picked up on/noticed by myself and Lustrousstone.
She has a small posy bowl and a jam thingy in a stand. I saw a pair of card-holders in an antique centre last weekend too (too expensive to pick up). I think Christine (Lustrousstone) might be on the trail of a potential maker - best wait for her response.  :)
She won't be long. You've got the "U-word" in your title!

Based on the shade of green and the translucency, Stevens and Williams might be a possibility. I have ID'd a vase in a very similar colour as S&W but not yet photographed it. Did they make such things? Well Webb made piggies.

Thank you for your comments.

They are semi-translucent, and they feel old.  There is a broken off pontil mark on the underneath.  Stevens and Williams is an interesting possibility, I would be happy with that :)

Any ideas how I could research them further?

I am wondering how to price them as well, I haven't seen anything similar at all.

The pair of card holders I saw was priced at £36. They were quite pretty little hot-worked pieces.

Some folk like glass swans in particular, some like glass birds and animals, some just like uranium glass... they're very possibly S&W... you've got a reasonably large "audience" of potential buyers from several areas.
Your swans are very pretty, so I would imagine they'd make their own price at auction, if listed well.  :)

Thanks Sue :)  I haven't quite got my head around selling on auction sites, so I will try them in my unit at Elsecar Heritage centre and see if they sell there.  I am going today and will be doing a shelf of uranium glass, I have a UV light to shine on them so they should look really pretty :)

Well, start off high.  ;D
You can always come down. I'd think swans would be a far more popular item than little card-holders.

Good luck - and a healthy and happy new year to you.  :-*
