Title: Vase/candleholder object. Any ideas?
Post by: horochar on March 18, 2006, 10:28:33 PM
Here's an interesting glass object.  I can't decide if it's a vase or a candleholder.  Can anyone help me with this one?  Is it old? (It does appear to have base wear).  Is it even Murano glass?  The design is vaguely reminiscent of the famous Venini hourglass, but this item is completely unsigned.  Any help would be appreciated.

I believe that it was a lighter base. I'd bet that standard metal lighters fit right inside it.

Thanks Laura.  I never thought of that.  I'll go back and see if a lighter fits in.  I take from your response that the maker/designer are unknown, as is so often the case in this field.

They want close to $70 for the piece, which seemed steep to me.  Might be a different story if it were part of a pair and they were candleholders.  It has a really interesting modern design.

It has a bit of a Cenedese feel, but I couldn't guarantee it.

If you keep in mind that tobacco culture was the hight of sophistication in the 1950s, it's easier to have an appreciation for this kind of thing. It's a cultural icon that has just about disappeared from our culture.
