Title: Large 'Lion of Venice' glass paperweight ~ Murano?
Post by: johnfandmaryp on January 15, 2014, 05:26:36 PM
Hi guys,
This large paperweight features what I believe is the 'Lion of Venice' and I'm hoping someone out there may be able to give me some information about it before I list it on eBay. It's about 4" (10cm) in diameter and 2 1/2" tall. The white lion is painted(?) on a cobalt blue cushion, there's a ring of millefiori canes around the outside near the bottom and the base is polished flat and has some signs of age. Given the subject matter, I'm guessing that it's a Murano weight, but would really appreciate any information you could let me have (e.g. is the lion painted or applied in some other way, is there a name for this type of weight and would I be correct in describing it as a magnum?).
As always, many thanks in anticipation!
Cheers, John.

Well - it's the "Mark the Evangelist Lion (http://www.google.ch/imgres?sa=X&biw=1280&bih=797&tbm=isch&tbnid=IcFC8PPpAUaQnM%3A&imgrefurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.art-imagery.com%2Fcat.php%3Fid%3Dmark&docid=mNURD0At_vA2BM&imgurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.art-imagery.com%2Fimages%2FCerne_Mark_Lion.jpg&w=299&h=356&ei=o9PWUqOTG8St7QaPqoCQDg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=63&page=1&start=0&ndsp=25&ved=0CGgQrQMwBg)" - not confined to Venice, although the possibly most famous example "lives" there.

I would say the weight is Murano, nevertheless, and the image is transfer printed.
