Title: Teal & Gold ribbed duck, hollow - possible Murano / Gambaro?
Post by: wolkenreb on March 19, 2012, 12:36:17 PM
I was wondering if anyone could help me to ID this rather nice duck?  It is a very heavy piece although the body is hollow.  It looks and feels 'quality' to me and I'd love to know more about it.  The body is 6" long.  The base is flattened off (have tried to show this in the last photo).  There are no markings.

Thanks John.  I'll have a look - couldn't be as nice as this one though!?

Later: I've found the one I think you mean on Ebay.  It is certainly very similar.  It is described as new.  I have emailed the seller to ask if a maker is known.  The main difference is that the one for sale isn't ribbed.

Thanks again John!  Found this one in completed listings, made by Luciano Gambaro.

The head is shaped differently and again, it's not ribbed.  However, I checked out Anita's Murano Zoo for Gambaro and found 2 similar looking ducks (similar to mine that is, but NOT RIBBED!).  http://sites.google.com/site/muranozoo/birds-9

Maybe Anita will be able to throw some light on this if she pops by.

To the Moderators:  Any chance of the title of this post including 'possible Murano / Gambaro?'

I am scratching my head at the eBay auction. Who is Luciano Gambaro? I know of Mario Gambaro. I'll have to check on Luciano. Can anyone make out the signature on the duck? To me it looks like scribble.

wolkenreb, your duck does look a lot like Gambaro & Poggi's duck except that yours is hollow and ribbed. Rosie knows a lot more about this style duck than I do, so she may be more help. Another company, Campanella, makes a similar style duck.

I checked the G&P website at http://www.gambaroepoggiglass.com/prodotti_visualizza.php?pos=30 and saw they do make some gold hollow, open tailed ducks. The ones they have on the site are smooth and gold with a murrine. I like the open bill on these ducks. They look similar to yours to me.

Thanks for looking Anita.  I tried to make out the signature on the Ebay duck but couldn't.

So, I think we can say that my duck is possibly by Gambaro & Poggi. That would be a nice result.  :)

Hope Rosie sees this!

Hello Nancy....I did see it,  and I would definately attribute it to Gambaro & Poggi.  I did see a ribbed one a couple of years ago, and missed the bidding(!), and that had a G&P label on it.

Very nice Nancy....dare I ask, are you thinking of sel........maybe not. :(

Oh that's great Rosie!  Thanks!  I'm really pleased to have an ID.  Isn't it lovely?  I'll be sure to let you know if I decide to sell - quite probable as no job in the offing!

Here are another two that are in the same style,  but this time a scavo....I think that's how the finish id described.....they are lovely, but were withdrawn from sale....just as well,  I couldn't have afforded them.....saved me seeing them outbid me!!

Now that I've seen a few of them they are quite distinguishable as Gambaro (or Gambaro & Poggi).  I'm wondering why some are hollow - maybe just to cut down on weight/save glass?  So glad I got my answer - thanks GMB!

Many apparently solid birds and animals are hollow when you look carefully. You couldn't create the ribs very well otherwise in this case. The question is more why is the end open.

I was just checking out the G&P website.  The biography was written by Luciano Gambaro, son of Mario Gambaro (who is still the maker, not Luciano).

If you turn the signature upside down and tweak the contrast, etc. it indeed says "Gambaro & Poggi Murano"

That answers the question about Luciano, Nancy. I had wondered if a son was involved in the glassmaking, particularly because I couldn't read the upside down signature. I thought that may be where the Luciano came from. At least we know the seller checked the site and came up with a name, even if it was the wrong name for the famous glassmaker.

There are some good videos on the G&P site. I love to watch them make glass. I particularly like the fish video.

Yes, well done to Ross for thinking to turn the signature the right way up!  I must check out those videos Anita.

I guess maybe the only question left is, as Christine said, why are the ends open?  Whatever the reason, it's still a fine looking bird (in my opinion!).

Silly question why are the ends open , (so they can go for a quack ) , i believe every living thing on this planet has an open end , dont you ?  :o  i used to be a genius but then i got smart .  ;D  it also helps with the stuffing .
