Title: Is this a Sowerby Trinket Set?
Post by: Jayne on May 30, 2012, 12:06:01 AM
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VINTAGE-GLASS-DRESSING-TABLE-SET-LOVELY-GREEN-GLASS-5-PIECES-/261034289254?pt=UK_Collectables_VanityCollectables_SM&hash=item3cc6db2866

I have seen this set now several times with these candlesticks which appear to be Sowerby 2501/Cadet/Junior, twice in clear, four times in peach, and now twice in green. Does anyone know if it is a Sowerby Set? Could it be the "Maid" set on Anne's site?

The colour looks wrong for Sowerby

Hmm the colour looks pretty similar to my Sowerby "Cadet" set to me,

I have the Pot in peach, it measures approx 11.4cm across and approx 12cm high, the quality is far superior to how I imagined it would be from seeing pictures, how about this colour?

I just read some moans about people disliking links, so I'm adding my Sowerby 2501/Cadet/Junior in green pics here too.

Also a note to Anne, I Googled "Sowerby Maid" and the only relevant thing that appeared was an old thread of yours. Reading through, I wonder if the above set/pot qualifies as a "bright diamond design"?  ;D

I don't compare pinks, but Sowerby green always seems to have a hint of yellow,  even when it's not uranium.

Do you not think then that my genuine Sowerby pieces above, are a very similar green to the Ebay listing Christine?

The set in the listing Jayne links to on eBay has two Sowerby 2501 set candlesticks (as shown in the Sowerby List 39 (http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/glass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogue_list39-11.htm) on Wayne's 20th Century Glass website) and what appears to be a Junior/Cadet pot (http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/glass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogue1933-09.htm).

The 2501 set is also shown in the Sowerby 1940 catalogue (http://www.thistlewoods.net/eBooks.html) (found on Glen Thistlewood's Sowerby CD) & the 1954 catalogue (http://www.20thcenturyglass.com/glass_encyclopedia/glass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogues/sowerbyglass_catalogue_1954-11.htm) with entirely different shaped candlesticks and pots, so it's all a bit confusing!

Meanwhile, the tray, pintray and the bowl in the listing are usually seen together, along with the List 39 2501 candlesticks... so it's another one of those puzzles we need to unravel!  ;D   I've seen them in pink, blue, green and clear so far.

I wonder if it is the elusive Maid set?

Hi Anne, it's good to know I'm not the only one to have noticed the Ebay listings tray powder pot and sometimes pin dish are often seen together with the 2501 candlesticks.

I have seen the tray and pot as a mish mash with other random pieces a couple of times, but I believe this particular combination has now cropped up too many times to be coincidence.

Regarding the pin dish, it's hard to see in the listing, but I believe it's an oval shape (the measurements suggest such) and has the same pattern base as my example peach/pink pot shown above, I have seen pictures of a it a few times and there is a current listing here showing it slightly more clearly on the left with the powder pot in the middle, and another random pin dish on the right.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BAGLEY-PINK-GLASS-DRESSING-TABLE-TRAY-POT-TWO-TRINKET-DISHES-/110887026598?pt=UK_Art_Glass&hash=item19d161bfa6

Regarding quality, my peach/pink pot certainly seems of Sowerby quality in my experience.

I don't think it's beyond the realms of reason to speculate that Sowerby may well have used the 2501 sticks for another set, they certainly seem quite casual about combinations in the 1933 catalogue advert for the Junior set, "also Cadet, brush tray with star centre"

So yes could this be the elusive Maid set? Time will tell, but meantime I personally feel it's likely this is a Sowerby made set. :)

I've just realised that I have most of one of these sets!  ::)  I picked it up a few weeks ago - has the tray, the pintray, and the 2501 candlesticks, but no pot.  The colour is the peachy pink rather than a pinky pink.  The pin tray is oval as you suggested too.  I have a sneaking suspicion I may have a separate pot in a box somewhere as well.  ;D  I really must go through the boxes and do pics of the un-photographed stuff once the Jubilee/stuff in the village is over and done with.

Yay! Well together we appear to have a whole set! Getting good photos is extremely time consuming I know. Please use the peach pot pic on your Trinket Site if needed. :)

The biggest issue is finding the space as well at the moment, as my house is crammed full of boxes with nowhere to unpack them to until I get stuff sorted out.

Aww that's a shame, don't worry, you'll get there in the end! :)

Here's a set in 'peachy' pink with what appears to be a well-matched tray (for colour anyway).

Any help?

Measurements of the pieces in the peachy pink set from my last post are:
tray – 2cm x 29.5cm w x 20cm d approx.;  lidded trinket pot – 13.5cm x 11.5cm approx.;  candlesticks – 8cm h x 5.5cm rim diameter approx.; small trinket tray – 3cm x 8.5cm x 5.5cm approx.

I think the set could easily be described as of ‘bright diamond design’.

Is there any more evidence or opinion yet as to whether this really is a strong candidate for the elusive Sowerby Maid set ?

I’ve seen several similar sets (or pieces from it) on auction sites recently attributed to Bagley (and one as Bagley Victoria 1032-2, which it patently is not).

With not quite half-closed eyes, though, it seems to me that there are some similarities to the candlesticks and lidded pot of Bagley Victoria 1032 -2 set shown by Anne at
http://www.glasstrinketsets.com/cms15/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=106&Itemid=72
although the differences are quite striking…  The tall knob on the pot lid of this set is faceted, and each facet decorated with small raised diamonds. The lid itself also has a different imitation cut pattern. Although of seemingly similar shape to Bagley Victoria 1032-2, the candlesticks from this set have a different imitation cut pattern and the shape of the foot is not the same - indeed, these candlesticks still look to me to be just the same as Sowerby 2501.

If not the Sowerby Maid set, might it perhaps be a Bagley Victoria 1032 – set 3 (written with tongue partially in cheek)?

I’m now adding a photo of the set in sea-green from the eBay link in Jayne’s first post of this thread (in case the eBay link disappears eventually), and also a photo of a part set in clear to show it comes in at least four colours.

(Permission for re-use of the image of the green set GMB granted by hammers161, and the clear set by wenfael).

I've just noticed that the Sowerby 1933 Catalogue advertises the "Maid" set as a  '7 piece set, Bright Diamond Design'  so it can't be this one as it's a 5 piece.

Here is another thread on this unknown set.

I suppose you could add Sowerby Maid is 7 piece set per the 1933 Catalogue to your GTS site page Anne?
