Title: Huge fish handled pressed glass lump
Post by: chuggy on October 17, 2006, 08:25:00 AM
Aren't people kind!! When an elderly friend recently died, I was given this piece of glass, because "You like glass".
You will already have guessed I'm less than chuffed with it, but as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I thought I'd share it in the hope that someone can ID it and that eventually someone may want it.
Art deco pressed glass with fish handles and measures 17" across.
Any thoughts at all?

It's a beautiful Brockwitz bowl!  I have one and I love it!   :D

As you say, Paul, beauty is in the eye of the beholder

It is Brockwitz 1936 and it came in two shapes out of the same mould:

pink and amber and white as yours are known, but I would guess also uranium green and blue were made

I love them - it is highest skill of mould making. See also the squirrels, the lions and parrots of same manufacturer on www.pressglas-pavillon.de bowls and plates Brockwitz

I absolutely agree with you, Pamela!   :D

Sadly, the fish handled bowl is the only one I could afford.  The squirrels, lions and parrots, being rarer, are out of my price range!   :(

Oh Leni, if it were just a question of price range
It is so hard to find the other animals too! I dream of belonging  the parrots in pink one day... never came across - did you?
Sometimes I feel they definitely did not manufacture them in pink...
Who can tell whether we are looking for something that was not produced?
There is wonderful German sentence for that:

Ich suche die eierlegende Wollmilchsau.

I try to convert into English:
I am looking for the egg givĂng, wool and milk producing pork  8)

Today I received the Lions in blue!

I also have the Squirrels in blue and the Fish in pink.

They are the most magnificent pieces and showcase the skills of the designer, mould maker and craftsman.

Hi Glen, congrats on the Lions in blue - very scarce i think.
Did you come across the parrots in either shape and colour?

Even though they're not to my taste, I am able to appreciate the craftsmanship and skill that went into designing and making these pieces -I'm not a total phillistine, I just don't covet any.  Which is probably how you feel about 99.9% of my glass.   It makes for an interesting world (and message board) don't you think?  :D

I have the Parrots vase in amber, Pamela, we've had it for rather a long time (and I use it every day   ).

We have the Budgie bird vase (are they budgerigars?) in pink.

Wonderful pieces.

And Pip, yes I totally agree with you. There are lots of items that appear on the GMB that I don't really like a whole lot. But you are so right that it makes for an interesting world (and GMB).

Glen thank you for that information, seems it is worth looking out for the pink parrots bowl and vase as well
