Title: Is this an early Caithness?

This pretty little paperweight is about 2 inches in diameter and has a beautifully flat polished based with slightly chamfered edges. It is also completely unmarked. It has a Caithness sort of look and I was wondering if it dated from the days when just paper labels were used. Does anyone have any idea who might have made it please? It came from a charity shop in Devon. I'm pretty confident that it isn't Chinese.

I agree it has a Scottish look about it - but could Devon be the clue for this (and maybe the other you listed)? Might they be unmarked Liskeard Glass or Teign Valley Glass products?

I did wonder but TVG stuff seems to have an indented fire polished pontil mark and I must admit I hadn't considered Liskeard Glass. I go have a root.

Liskeard Glass is now Merlin Glass, don't know if they still make paperweights but they used to, website if you want to ask them: http://www.merlinglass.co.uk/newindex.html

If it is Caithness, it's likely to be a second - they wouldn't have passed a weight with one big bubble so much bigger then the others, although I should also say the splodginess of the splodges looks much more splodgy than any Caithness with which I am familiar - apart from the very recent Sara Patterson things - such as the moggie which has appeared at the top of the page here.
(I don't know about you reading that - but typing it got my brain in a spin and made me cross-eyed!  :thud: )

They might. My Helen MacDonald ltd ed Chartreuse has four bubbles: two are the same size, the other two are bigger and even bigger respectively.

I've seen things marked as seconds - and I can find no flaw at all!  :spls:
I've got a Sarah Patterson Free-Form charger - described as a Ltd. ed. of 250. It is not marked in any way at all - so I have assumed it is a second - there are a couple of tiny air bubbles trapped in the outer rim - which I wouldn't have thought enough to have it demoted.

And my Helen MacDonald "Edinburgh Rock" is a second - on close inspection there is a small patch of swirly movement in the clear glass of the dome - again, not a lot of anything "wrong".

So much for info re. seconds I thought was almost watertight.  :usd:  :wsh:
