Title: Pretty little vase for ID?
Post by: kathykate on October 26, 2012, 04:17:36 PM
Hi there, wonder if anyone can tell me anything about attached. It has no marks at all, I just thought it was rather nice.
It is 20cms high and the hole in the top is tiny, about 3mms. Base is heavy.
Thanks!

Me again, no answers to my question! I am thinking it is a lollipop vase. But who made it? The top is very rounded. Mdina?

Hello and welcome!
Sorry, I missed this before and sorry you got no responses at all.  Very remiss of us! :'(

It does look Maltese of some sort, doesn't it?
It's certainly much later than anything I'm familiar with and I can't be sure it's not Mtarfa or Phoenician.
Is there silver foil in it? I find that confusing!
Mdina did some stuff with gold foil (but still later than my sort of area, really).

You could try sending Mdina an image and asking them if it's their work.  :)

Hello, thanks for reply, there are both silver and gold flecks in it. It was a charity shop find and I just find it very tactile and interesting, and I like to research stuff I like. I went to Malta a few weeks ago and watched the Mdina glassblowers in action, I could have watched all day!
Regards
Kate

So, you know more about contemporary Mdina than I do.  ;)
The way the colours are used and the use of both silver and gold does make me think of leaning more towards Phoenician. They have some really superb colourways.
How is the base finished off?

Fully polished flat, nice and shiney - and a better view of the colours too!
I'm still leaning towards Phoenician - they're the maker I most associate with lots of streaky colours - but that's still just my guts rumbling.
It is a lollipop!
