Title: Help ID mystery vase - Murano?
Post by: Laura Friedman on December 01, 2005, 05:01:29 PM
Good morning group.

I bought this large, heavy vase as Murano glass.  Everything about it says Italian to me, but I'm nagged by the base. I don't usually see such perfectly polished pontil marks on Italian glass.  So, I thought I'd run it past the group in case anyone has ever seen anything like it with a label.  It shades from amber to green, and has interesting opaque "trails" applied to the exterior.

Just the discussion there of whether items with polished pontils like yours can be Murano or not.
I have bumped the thread up to make it easier for you to find and also have now added another Murano item with a polished pontil.

Hi,

Got it. Thanks for bumping the thread up. Very interesting.

I've had a lot of Murano glass with polished pontils. However, this one is so perfectly round, and, well, perfectly polished, that it just doesn't feel Italian to me. I wonder if it could be Czech or something like that. I just bought the new Czech glass book by Helmut Ricke, and am going to peruse it just in case.

Thanks!

Laura

Hi Laura,
I have plenty of Murano pieces with the same polished round pontil mark. I dont think because it is like that it means it is not Murano. I am unsure of the maker for the vase, but looks Murano to me.

Only thought I have on this apart from very covetous ones, is that I saw some pieces when in Venice a few years back in a very up-market Venetian gallery with the opaque trails that were listed as Seguso Vetri D'arte from the early 1960's, but a beautiful piece.

Well I am also 99.9% sure it's Murano but thought I'd get Chuggys imput before commiting (coward !!) I had thought earlier than Chuggy reports and thought I had seen similar online but can't find it in my ref gallery.

Chrbska (Czech) have done gloupy pieces but not like this - different technique.

So moving to the Murano board.
