Title: Help Identify Please-Mercury Glass?
Post by: DebraY on August 28, 2006, 06:08:25 PM
Hello everyone. I would really appreciate any help in identifying a pitcher that I have recently ran across. It is pottery but I have been told that it is possibly a mercury-glass finish? I am completely lost.  I know that it has what is termed a weeping gold handle and decoration. It has a celedon base glaze, and this glaze is under the gold as well. It appears to have either the initials LB on the bottom or it may be a manufacturer marking. It does appear to have been molded as opposed to hand thrown. The silver finish has me at utter confusion and I am getting conflicting information. Photos of the picture can be viewed at

I am new to this board so please forgive me if I have incorrectly inserted the link. Thanks to all for any help you can offer.

Hi,

Mercury Glass is glass silvered on the inside of a hollow wall. You were misinformed. This is a ceramic pitcher with silver and gold glazing. Likely 1950''s/60's and could be German or US, or elsewhere.

Hi Debra, welcome to the board!
Frank is absolutely right.
But I dare to mention that also the glazing of ceramics is a kind of 'glassy' material
English is not my mother tongue, and I am not a chemist, but could imagine something like 'mercury glazing'  :?:
