Title: Crystal Decanter 'S' Mark
Post by: petet63 on October 02, 2012, 12:52:20 PM
This is a very heavy Crystal decanter at 2.152kg. It has a 'S' etched on the base. I have seen Spiegelau mark of an 's' with an Umlaut over it but this is the 'S' on its own. Is it Spiegelau ? They seem to do mostly modern styles and havent seen this style at all. It is a quality Clear  and well cut with faceted corners. According to MOH I have an obsession for Decanters !! Any Clues.

That makes for some confusing reading. I will look into it more tonight. Would I be right in looking to Stuart and or Webb Corbett for a pattern name. There seems to be 3 different S styles  and also a S Stourbridge mark. Would be nice to have a good find. Thanks for the pointer Lustrousstone

First thought was "Atlantis" crystal from Portugal.  Obviously ntyhe S rather stuffed that idea up.  BUT Portugal does have another significant crystal maker called "Stephens" which has been around a long, long tiome.  I suggest an email to them as a start.

The computer says no  ;D ;D I have only seen a few mentions of Stephens Crystal with none showing the factory or business. I have trawled the crystal replacements etc but couldn't find this pattern. As we know, signs of wear or lack of are not always a true guide to age so I cant guess at an age to it. It came with a porcelain Staffordshire Whiskey tag that had all relevant info on the back. If only Crystal did the same. How far back did this style of decanter go ? I will get back on this later today. Thanks for the help so far.   Pete

Have you considered 'S' for second quality just a thought  but Whitefriars etched an 'S' on second weights and crystal sure someone once told me that.

That was my original thought funnily enough   :D until  the spiegelau S (with umlaut) sent me down the =S= -S- S route :o. Not the Whitefriars but the S for second. I cant really see why it would be second but will look a lot closer later. Still a bit busy to finish looking for this piece. Hopefully I will find it when I am looking at something else, a regular thing for all I'm sure.
