Just purchased this rather cute decanter- the stopper is broken and I would like to hear from members if I should have the stopper base repaired or leave as is ( it just barely sits in the mouth)- I do not have any pieces BUT I do have access to Anthony Gennet of Flamedaisy in Nelson New Zealand to do the repair. regards Carol
P.S I do have another query re an engraved bird further down the postings if any one would like to help with that one.

I'm not sure how you would get the stopper repaired when it needs glass added to it, but it's a nice piece and worth considering repair I think. It's probably Murano glass, but we'll see how you get on in this forum then maybe swap you over later. :thup:

I have seen decanters where a broken, or misfitting peg has been replaced and have misgivings about the process, but pragmatically it would 'improve' the stability of this particular piece and avoid further damage.
I have asked restorers about the process myself and always fought shy, but effectively the old peg has to be ground back to get a flat surface; a new piece of glass having a corresponding flattened area added by glueing, and then the new peg ground to fit.
Provided that the repair is obvious, then nobody is going to be fooled into thinking it original and therefore perfect. When that is the raison d'etre (I'm thinking of others here) then the problems begin.
If you go along the route of repair and use in this case, say a piece of clear glass, then that corresponds with, amongst others, the English Heritage idea of making repairs obvious - no attempt to deceive (if an item is going to be sold) and the possibility of re-doing it in the future should ideas change.
I have discussed this in the context of the general as well as trying answer the question in order to explore the rammifications of re-pegging.

Many thanks to Nigel Anne and Max for your advice, comments and links- I had a thought that my cute decanter was Czch but I digress. After having a sleep on my original request as far as I am concerned the repair has to be reversable, i.e. cause no damage. The glass option seems too complex ; BUT as there is no easment between the stopper fragment and the mouth I am still stuck as to what I would attach to the stopper that could be easily shaped to fit and not come off when it is removed- any further thoughts?? or is glass the only way to go. Anne, you are a star- what a blast! :smg: That guy has been in storage for wha t seems like for ever so it is lovely to have a positive attribution. I am playing around with some form of glue-able plastic that can be formed- oh well I will have a bit more of a ponder. :t: :t:
