Title: Help with registration numbers please.
Post by: Anne E.B. on March 17, 2006, 04:47:18 PM
Firstly, is there a website that matches registration numbers to makers please?

Secondly, this old jug (not sure what it would be used for - its approx.9" high) has REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR on the base. http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y195/glassie/pg.jpg I've also  had a couple of pieces in the past that have also had 'Patent applied for' impressed on the base.  Why would companies produce items beforehand?  Wouldn't a Patent and a Registration no. safeguard their design?  Sorry to ask stupid questions, but I really don't know   :?

In general companies want to get their products to market asap and registration or patents take time to be approved. By adding an "applied for" they are letting potential copyists know that they will protect their design and can prove when the created design.

Be aware that the registrant is not neccesarily the maker. See also http://www.patent.gov.uk/design/index.htm

Many thanks for help/info Frank and Anne :P

BTW Anne, what does your Mum use her jug for?  Its quite narrow at the top.  Just wondered if it was for condiments of some kind?  I don't think it would have originally had a lid/stopper though.  I reckon its quite old.

Hi Anne, Mum uses hers for apple juice for the non-alcohol drinkers when she does a meal. She told me that they used to be sold with something in them and sealed with wax or similar. I can't recall what the something in them was though - I'll ask her tomorrow.  :)
