Title: Chance -Britannia Pint Glass
Post by: Ming on June 04, 2011, 03:23:10 PM
I saw a Britannia pint glass in a charity shop the other day. I did not know Chance produced pint glass in Britannia pattern. I came across lot of Lancer pint glass but never this one.  Its not in the book either.

Keith. The Britannia pint glass is in B'ham. Let David tell us is it worth getting it first. Of course l am making assumption that it is still there.

Having looked at the manuscript of the forthcoming book, I think someone needs to buy it now, as there is confusion over sizes and volumes and it would help to clarify the issue.

Is this a pint jug, or a pint glass? I know there could be a 1 pint tumbler (½pt is shown in the book).

The half-pint milk jug is 4¼in. tall
The pint lemonade jug is 7in. tall

If it is a jug then they are not that uncommon, but certainly worth £1.50!

David. It is a pint glass.  I have double checked it.  Same size as Lancer pint glass. On the handle there is a resit for metal lid when required. I will show it here when l got it.

I look forward to seeing it then. Although the Britannia pattern is quite common, I have never heard of, or seen reference to, a pint glass. Photos would be much appreciated, as always.

Here is the pint glass. 5 inches high.

If it's only 5-in high, it seems unlikely that it would hold a pint. Can you measure the volume

Christine

Lancer Pint tankard is also the same high and hold same volume (in the book 1 pint tankard is 5 inch high.)

So this a 1 pint Britannia tankard then.

I suggest you measure the volume because David said

I'm wondering if I should check out the jug capacities. The Lancer pint tankard is indeed 5in. tall, so I would expect the Britannia to be similar. However, it could be that the Britannia jug, with a higher top edge and a lip is taller because of this. Also, you never fill jugs to the brim, but you would  a tankard (before measured marks were introduced on over-sized glasses).

Ming, I can't put my hands on the Britannia 'pint' jug right now, but it should be just under half litres if you have no imperial measure to hand.

David
I have put half litre of water into the tankard and it just fit. So it is 1 pint capacity.
I think Keith got a Britannia Jug so you can get him to measure it.

If a half litre just fits, then one pint will spill over the lip!

I should said there is still just over half of a inch  left to the top after put in 0.5 Litres of water.

A pint is 564mls. (according to milk bottles anyway!)
