Title: Lovely Perthshire p/w doorknob
Post by: Max on July 25, 2006, 09:16:15 AM
(Hmm...wonder if I get a headache from using the computer too much?   )

I'm sharing this with you because it's just so lovely.  I bought it a couple of days ago for a very good price.  I thought it might be Strathearn, but Frank suggested Perthshire, and he was right...it has the original sticker stuck to the base.

Originally I was going to use this on my office door, but it's perhaps too gorgeous to risk scratching.  There's a slight flaw within the weight; a smudge of white on the base blue colour, but apart from that, it's perfect.

Here it is:

Lovely, isn't it?

Use it, most of our doors have PP knobs, one Vasart and a couple of Strathearns.

Max, you really must start a proper paperweight collection now. :D

You can kick it off with extensions to the Perthshire range of doorknobs:
PP16 - spoke pattern - 1969 to 1970
PP17 - spoke pattern - 1969 to 1973
PP18 - closepack - 1969 to 1978 & 1984 to 1997 (some with "P" cane)
PP18A - five cluster pattern & "P" cane - 1995 to 1997
PP73 - concentric with pressed fluted outer and "P" cane - 1984 to 1997
PP76 - mini concentric, fluted outer, "P" cane - 1985 to 1997

Info from the 1997 book The Complete Guide to Perthshire Paperweights

I don't klnow if they had other doorknob designs between 1997 & 2000.

Yours, by the way, is one of the PP18 range.

Ahem Kev.  Have you SEEN the prices??    I can only buy them if they're absolute bargains, which is the only reason I'm considering actually using this one...if I'd paid £100ish for it, I'd have it in a cabinet.  :!:   Generally, I'm buying to re-sell these days, but this doorknob is a keeper I think.

I've seen Frank's ones and they do look fabulous in situ.  I have a Strathearn on my bathroom door which I think was about £35 which is the most I'd pay for something that'll naturally get worn with use.

I am looking at paperweights as a collector though generally.  I have a bit of an eye for quality (er...apart from a couple of ghastly mistakes recently  Like when I paid £40 for a PLASTIC figurine and didn't realise it was plastic until I smashed it a couple of days after receipt of it   )

Thank you for the dates information above.  I should get another paperweight book, the one I have is very general (Reilly)...don't read, don't learn eh?!

Max, your doorknob is really very beatiful, the little flowers and the colors are amazing 8)

I´ve bought one PMcD Doorknob last week, which is showing at the photo and I wish I´ll found some smaller doorknobs like the old Strathearns for my display cabinet.

Have a nice evening

That's really beautiful Nadine.  :D  :D  Mine has more canes, but yours is prettier I think.  Er...can I admit my stupidity and ask who/what PMcD is?

I bought my PP's retail, 68 pounds each. They fetch around 100 on eBay.

Vasarts are as rare as hen's teeth but still only fetch 40-150 pounds, Strathearn fetch 25 if not recognised 40-120 if recognised.

Vasart ones have the nicest mountings, not as gaudy modern brass as Strathearn and PP. Strathearns are found in both brass and a grey metal, plain and slightly fancy. Most of the PP's had fancy mounts.

Vasart also did draw knobs, very rare.

Just make sure you have a door stop that prevents the handle hitting anything and you have no problems. Great for keeping kids out of a room, at 6 Felicity has only just become able to turn them. If you have modern doors you might have a problem in that your hand gets crushed against the door frame if you are not careful - this is because the user less wood and use narrower mechanisms moving the turm point too close to the edge of the door. Better to buy antique doors from an antiques salvage centre. Mahogany looks best with weight handles, they look pretentious on bleached and pine doors.

This is more likely to be related to the original fittings. Most people are replacing a turning handle with a lever handle. Mortice locks designed for lever handles are set closer to the edge of the door than those designed for turning handles. Older doors probably had turning handles. Door ironmongery is a whole new ball game!

You're so wise Frank!

Thanks Adam...I think I will use it, although a lady that missed bidding on it is keen to buy from me.     Actually, I don't think it'll look too bad on my bleached pine doors (although the silver is much better) as nothing here matches anyway!  That's how I like it - it's easier!   :D  :D
