Title: Signed Airlie 1973. Kirkhill?
Post by: scavo on May 10, 2012, 07:55:05 PM
Picked up this in an interesting collection I bought today from a woman whose sister owned a glass and china shop. Most of the items are old stock stored in the loft.

Vase is about 5" high and has a trailed design wrapped around the outside.
It is a lovely shade of blue that had me thinking it was alexandrite as I unwrapped it.
The pontil mark is unpolished but the base is part-polished.

It is signed AIRLIE 1973. I believe that this could be Kirkhill Glass by John Airlie?

It's not only lovely - it's an important bit of history!

Thanks Christine and Sue,

Do either of you know what gives the blue glow?

And, I suppose an idea of value will be determined when I put it to the test! When I sell I will reference this thread and announce the sale in the 'for sale' section here. Hopefully it will go to someone who uses this forum. Unfortunately for me it isn't something to keep - although I appreciate it's beauty/importance.

Hi Steve,

There some good info on Scotland's Glass on John Airlie.

To quote "Kirkhill Glass is noted for its sparkling blue colour, a by-product of the kiln design. "

Thanks Greg.
Very informative link. I didn't actually realise hope important it is. Still, I think I must sell.

I'm sure Scotland's Glass would like images of your piece!

Yes, they don't have photos of this one on there. I have sent a message but it has gone to France not Scotland.

That's OK; it's where Frank the site organiser, and chief honcho lives
