Title: Value of a Chris Pantano art glass paperweight
Post by: sandhillsjeb on August 16, 2013, 01:33:47 PM
I have a Rainforest paper weight by Chris Pantano, signed and dated 6464-94, approximately 4 inches tall and wide.  Can anyone tell what this might be worth?

Hi and welcome!  :)
I'm afraid we don't discuss values here - they're far too subjective. Your best bet to get a ball-park figure would be to try to find something similar on an internet auction site, and watch it to see what it sells for.

Hi, well, most people don't, but I do with no obligation at all of course.  Looking on ebay one sold for almost £90, but it is in my opinion nicer than yours.  Hard to say really, but that should give you an idea as they do appear to be quite unusual.  Don't read quite unusual as massively valuable though!

 ;)
Just keep your fingers crossed it doesn't come back and bite you on the bum, with somebody all upset at you!

Late reply but...

Rainforest paperweight.

To me,  around AU$120 to AU$150.   Probably cost a bit to ship to Australia now a days.

Chris has moved on from that series and has cut back (as far as I can tell) from the level of activity when he was making these.  It is a very popular series and vases of Rainforest are regularly Ebayed for $800(AU) plus - although I have yet to see one actually sell at that price.

"regularly Ebayed for $800(AU) plus"

LOL   yeah, there was someone asking $2250 for an 'outback' vase recently.
a bit optimistic... if it sold my outback bowl would be 'worth' more.
Having said that, I added a black base 'dreamtime' vase that I paid over $400  ...smaller vases and another 'wave' paperweight were much cheaper... as I estimate the 'value' for the OP's piece.
It is hard to say what can happen on eB though.... crazy things can happen, like me picking up a huge blue bowl made by Coin Heaney last year for a very low price... postage of a custom built box to vendor and back to me cost more than the glass. Arrived in one piece though - rather thin in some areas.
Shame my camera died. No way of taking a pic at all.

Is Chris still working glass these days?

Misha, I thought he had stopped, but Kirra Gallery in Melbourne has a range of "Tree Stump" vases that are quite recent I believe.  I suspect he is cutting back.  A pity since so many wonderful ranges came from his studio.  The Desert series, Rainforest series, Reef Series, Dreamtime Series, etc. many of them copied blatantly by others since.

By the way one of the first pieces I was able to identify for a GMB member was of a Dreamtime Vase which was unusual to me as it had a light background and dark figures - the opposite to what I was used to.

Yes, I recall that 'inverse' bottle.

Interesting... my black background one has a very subtle iridised sheen to it.
I wonder if the clear background had a similar element to it.

On another note, I saw an auction catalogue on line that had a 'Noosa' vase listed.
So, I wonder how many 'Noosa' pieces are out there.

Also, 'Fire Opal' and 'True Blue' are another series Chris made.
I have a perfume 'Fire Opal' and a large early vase of the 'True Blue' that doesn't have the orange rim detail.

I'm just out to add more to the collection when I can.

Thats pretty.  Mine is similar but with more of a pale blue plus the diachronic content in twin swirls if I remember correctly.
I think I paid around AU$140 for that while living in WA... came from a seller in Cronulla, where I'd lived for years prior to the move to WA. :-\

Most of my good glass is still packed away safe from moving across the Continent. Last years additions are on 'display' but not really due to our lack of trust in a cat here.  Tends to get very naughty when deprived of company or attention.

Last years additions have been 2x very nice Ricardo Studio [large vase like 'reef' and large perfume bottle - very high standard of work in both], 2x Colin Heaney blown pieces [vlarge bowl and iridised witches ball], 3x Chris Pantano ['wave' paper weight, 'dreamtime' vase and small iridised bottle], 1x Gordon Studio paperweight, 1x Oasis Crystal small bowl [G Dickinson], 1x Pauline Delaney iridised pattern oil burner... and a few signed op shop finds.

We are based in Eastern Suburbs of Melbourne. Can't see your email contact details.
