Title: Very unusual vase looking for an ID
Post by: Laura Friedman on August 21, 2006, 12:29:52 AM
Hi group,

I am trying to identify this unusual vase.  It stands just under 10" tall.  The vase is actually a 'murrina,' with each opaque orange murrine embedded in a clear window, which has been rolled to make this "patchwork" vase. It is heavily iridized, and the orange stripes are on the exterior (as are the murrines).  The orange murrines and stripes are not iridized.  It has a nicely polished pontil and base wear. It also has some ash in the glass.

Any opinions are welcome, especially correct ones.

Hi Laura :) I never realised you were in CA.
Don't know anything about your vase, but it's a beauty!

I wonder if that murrine design is an ideogram?  It seems perhaps too deliberate to be purely abstract?

The shape of the murrines reminds me of Japanese writing characters but I don't suppose that is helpful really.  :?

I had the same thought Anne. Perhaps post on a Japanese site for elimination, or at your local Sushi bar.

Is there really a Japanese glass site, where they speak english, that I could post this? Has anyone ever seen Japanese glass like this?

There were actually extremely similar murrines used by Murano glass companies, mainly in the 1970s by Luciano Gaspari for Salviati and by Tony Zuccheri for Venini. However, the rest of the vase doesn't look like the work of either of those companies.

My local sushi bar would only recognize it if it were cat shaped and had it's left paw in the air.
